Can you trust that photo? Dozens of photographers, engineers, and other experts helped me detail the issue. Digital cameras have always invented 2/3 of their data, but AI raises the stakes. I'm not as pessimistic as many, though. Do you trust your friends? https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/features/how-close-is-that-photo-to-the-truth-what-to-know-in-the-age-of-ai/

I also recommend this companion piece on trying to figure out which photos are real and which are generated by AI: https://www.cnet.com/pictures/ai-or-not-ai-can-you-spot-the-real-photos/

@the5thColumnist 100%. Look at the differences over the years in Ansel Adams' prints of Moonrise Over Hernandez, for example.

There are degrees, though, and cameras make more changes on their own, and post processing is getting more powerful, and social media makes distribution easier...

@stshank
Your article goes into a lot more detail than my little post and I appreciate it very much.

@the5thColumnist There's no bottom to the issue, either. The deeper you look, the squishier everything gets. What spectra can the visible eye see? How does the varying angle of incidence of light on a sensor from the center to the edge affect the photo? What data should compression algorithms discard? How do you set white balance?
