Is there a standardized way to reference recordings of songs? I feel like there must be an identifier or a set of fields that uniquely identify a piece of music. I know if I sat down to list the fields I would come up with something woefully inaccurate.

( trackers must have already solved this)

> The ABBA song Dancing Queen has the first and lowest International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC), T-000.000.001-0

Okay fun, but not particularly clever… why this song?

Ok, and here’s the standard for identifying recordings. Not too excited that these are industry sponsored standards, but let’s see what we got…

Not a huge fan of the central registry. There must be a million recordings that simply don’t go through this process. I’m interested in something more flexible.

@hpincket Kia ora!

We use unique ID’s (MBID’s) to track recordings (distinct from our MBID’s for ‘works’ etc). Our data is added by the community so there is no guarantee that everything is present and correct - but the framework is there. Users can also link our recording entities to ISRC’s.

When the big industry players start caring about metadata (e.g. paying the correct contributors) the large scale mess will get sorted out… don’t hold your breath!
