@dhrystone The most annoying thing about owning a nice knife?

Realising, while standing in the airport security line, that I forgot to pack it into my checked in luggage.

May this never happen to you!

@ellane Definitely won't, I'm OCD about packing precisely everything into their correct locations when travelling. I have a vacation travel packing checklist and a separate one for business travel, where I check off each item as I pack it. As a third dan black belt I'm reasonably comfortable travelling on temporary trips without always having a shank in my pocket. 😄

@dhrystone That’s good. Have you ever gone up against someone trained in Jiujitsu? My blue belt son tells me these encounters can be quite interesting. Throw a knife into the mix, however, and it might not matter how many dans you have to your name…

@ellane At our school we have a mix of different styles - beyond the regular Okinawan shorin ryu that we study, there's also a blend of Filipino kali (knife and stick fighting plus unarmed), wrestling and some basic grappling, ryukyu kempo, shuri-ryu, rolls and breakfalls, chi-sao (sticky hands from kungfu) etc. We cross over knife work with unarmed work so that for example if you have a knife and you drop it you can seamlessly interchange the same moves into unarmed ones (a downward stab becomes a hammerfist, outward stab becomes an arm break and so on). There's quite an art to it all. I'm no stranger to close combat or groundfighting, but I'm definitely not an expert in the latter. So if I ever got into an unavoidable fight for realsies, I'm 100% going to be taking the advice in this Lee Child quote before things ever hit the ground. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/569426-hit-them-fast-hit-them-hard-and-hit-them-a

@dhrystone black friday deal?

dhrystone, (edited )
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

@cetan Not exactly. Deals like this show up all the time, I keep my ear to the ground on Slickdeals and also /r/knifedeals on Reddit. Here's the post that I learned of this deal from, for example - https://slickdeals.net/f/17103799-kershaw-cryo-pocket-knives-cryo-blackwash-zing-ss-cryo-or-cryo-ii-20-each-w-fs-more

I don't need any more mechanical keyboards, SBCs or pocket knives. Am always annoyed at myself a couple of hours later when the knife gets dropped into the box on my desk along with all the others. This one MAY get dropped into the exclusive EDC box out in the lounge and go into carry rotation though. It's really nice.

@dhrystone not an unfamiliar feeling. Seems like it would be very nice as long as you turn that clip around. 😊 braces for impact

@cetan Zero impact, well spotted and you’re absolutely right. Done. This look better?

Edit: (obsessively wipes grime from previous mounting holes with alcohol swab pad)

Edit2: the only problem now is that it’s no longer “deep carry”. No big deal.
