Love this new mural on Paisley Road West in the Cardonald area of Glasgow. It features Winnie Drinkwater, the first woman in the world to hold a commercial pilot's licence, which she got in 1932 at the age of nineteen. She was born in Waterfoot in East Renfrewshire in Scotland in 1913 and died in New Zealand in 1996. The mural was painted by Spraywell Murala

@stx That's the spot. 👍🙂

@stx What was the middle one advertising? I can't quite make it out.

stx,

@thisismyglasgow I think it says Beer, and it's maybe the bottom half of a sign.

@stx Yeah, Beer was as much as I got out of it, too. The colours used don't make the brand obvious either.

stx,

@thisismyglasgow This is it zoomed and as best lit as I can find in the pics, looks as if it says

".....N'S
BEER
T... .... .... I want"

@stx McEwan's Beer The One That I Want? Although did they ever call any of their products McEwan's Beer?

stx,

@thisismyglasgow McEwan's is a good guess! Can't quite find that slogan, but there are some trays at cannyscot that just state McEwan's Beer : https://www.cannyscot.com/TraysMcEwansBeer4.htm

@stx Yeah, I couldn't find either, but it could have been a very short-lived one. Or I could have just got it very wrong (I did lose three games of hangman in a row to an eight year old yesterday!)

stx,

@thisismyglasgow haha, no problem, I'll keep plugging away. (nb, the Coke advert slogan below dates it to 1922 : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Coca-Cola_slogans)

@stx I hadn't realised it was quite so old. It looks like these hand-painted adverts were simply covered up by billboards (for posters persumably), which must have protected them for quite a while.

stx,

@thisismyglasgow I lived near there for years and remember bigger billboards, and when I was back in 2019 they were gone, uncovering these. Maybe the coke one was covered earlier, but I was also surprised at the age, and had to double check the slogan was the 1922 one and not a later, similar one.

@stx There is always the possibility that someone later recreated an earlier advert, but if that had happened, it would probably be locally known.
