Having second thoughts about my self-hosted #Mastodon instance, it’s just too much of a resource hog for a single user / small instance on a 4 core / 4G vServer if you want to run other stuff (#writefreely is live, #pixelfed to be installed!) as well. On the other hand it is very nice that the software is stable, reliable and well designed. So either I need to move to a bigger server or decommission my self-hosted profile and look into other options for micro / macro blogging self-hosting again. I did like #gotosocial but the current version doesn’t install on my #yunohost properly. Tried #Akkoma and #Pleroma - weren’t my thing, can’t get over the design. I do like #Friendica and its possibilities but it is a bit clunky at times and I have some doubts if protocols other than the quasi standard #ActivityPub have much of a main stream future which kinda could make the additional Friendica features a little islandish. Same applies to #Hubzilla which I only start testing. Leaves #Misskey and #Calckey which could be good options but not sure about the reliability and gameplan there, I don’t want to tinker every night on my server so #Calckey probably need to become a little more stable first, #Misskey seems to have no current version on YunoHost, so need to explore other install options… Any thoughts very welcome! @fediversenews@fediversede
@choyer can we help debugging gotosocial installation ? 🙂
As for Akkoma, what you coule do is use Mastodon (actually Glitch-soc) front-end with it, so you get a very similar to Mastodon experience on a much lighter server :)
It's still a bit youbg but you also try Mangane frontend, its UI is much cleaner and simpler than Plero/Akkoma default frontends.
Also there is a working Misskey package for Yunohost 🙂
It's happening once again... I didn't not mention fediversenews but it automatically boosted my content...
How do we opt-out of this @atomicpoet ?
And btw your contact info are outdated.
@Lapineige Stop commenting on this thread. It's the only way to stop your posts from being federated.
@Fediverse News runs on #Friendica. Friendica is six years older than #Mastodon and works a lot differently, also because it's modelled after Facebook and not after Twitter.
Mastodon's threads are tied together from stand-alone posts. These ties require mentioning everyone whom you reply to.
Friendica uses the same "thread = one post + comments on that one post" model as Facebook and as all blog engines out there. Replies to posts are always comments firmly associated with that post. This means you do not have to mention the author of the original post in a comment on that particular post.
This also means that comments on a post are treated all the same and work all the same with or without a mention.
@choyer (friendica)'s post is not a Mastodon toot. It's a post on a public Friendica forum, namely Fediverse News. Forums on Friendica are user accounts configured to automatically distribute (in Mastodon lingo, essentially boosting) not only all posts, but also all comments on all posts to the posts to everyone who is connected to that particular forum.
If you reply to a forum post, you participate in that forum, full stop. If you don't want your posts to be distributed, don't reply to forum posts.
@Chris Trottier can't do anything about how Friendica forums work. Even the Friendica devs can't, not without completely breaking Friendica's group/forum functionality.
If you want to talk to Choyer without everyone else reading it, try sending him a direct/private message. Not as a reply to any one of his posts in this thread. A stand-alone private message.
@Lapineige Hi, thank you for your kind reply. Re GoToSocial, it’s still this problem: forum.yunohost.org/t/installat… Waiting for the next package version to try again. Akkoma doesn’t install either at the moment, some issue with nginx in the install script, this seems to be known, i.e. the automated test has failed. Re Misskey I wasn’t sure whether this package is up to date as the app seems to be at v 13.x and on Yunohost it is 12.x.
As for Akkoma, you mean very recently ?
I merged a (security) patch in 2 steps recently, the first one broke attached media but the second should have corrected it, and it should install anyway.
@Lapineige Yes, Akkoma install failed as recently as this morning. It comes up with a lot off error messages (similar to those in test job #16306)) and then roles back.
