Recently saw a post on LinkedIn with the quote “Abelism looks like calling people 'inspiring' for navigating a system that is designed for exclusion, while doing nothing to hold the system accountable.”

As Stella Young said “We are not here for your inspiration”.

Inspiration porn is so debilitating to those living with disabilities.

As it happens we are, in my MEd, about to undertake a week focusing on resilience. Much of this particular unit has been very triggering for me. Admittedly, this is in part the impetus for me to this masters to prevent my experience to happen again.

In this aspect resilience is nothing more than the booby prize people with disabilities occasionally receive by simply surviving.

Not living, surviving.

If we lived in a less ableist, capitalist, and hierarchal society, spending less time finding ways to exclude and disenfranchise people and more time finding universal inclusive practices to allow and enhance the potential of everyone, then there wouldn’t be so much for people like me to overcome.
