Estrella,

My mom started a local, non-English blind/VI whatsapp group, sharing cooking tips, kitchen hacks and recipes.

It's occured to me that people might really find something like this useful, but I want something you can just browse through. So...

If I set up a folder, or a site, or literally anything, who would be interested? Who'd want to contribute? Can we get a feel for the potential value of this?

TheQuinbox,

@Estrella Cooking is one of my largest fears when it comes to living on my own, something like this would be tremendously helpful.

sapphireangel,

@TheQuinbox @Estrella I'm curious what about it on your own scares you?

TheQuinbox,

@sapphireangel @Estrella A complete lack of confidence, mostly. I don't know how to do much, not to mention the fact that our kitchen is almost entirely inaccessible, and that leads to me being worried that I'll do it wrong and then normally I just end up ordering or microwaving something.

bryansmart,

@TheQuinbox @sapphireangel @Estrella Accessible helps. It would make cooking tough if I couldn't immediately lay my hands on tongs, slotted spatulas, mitts, etc, not to mention spices. However, you have to accept that you're going to mess up. You'll use too much or too little of something, cook it too long or not enough maybe, etc. Learning how stuff breaks teaches you how time, temperature, cooking methods, spices, etc effect things.

bryansmart,

@TheQuinbox @sapphireangel @Estrella If you make mistakes, try to eat them, anyway. Do kind of an analysis of how it came out, form a hypothesis, and propose a change for next time. See if the change does what you expect, or not. Following recipes is good in the beginning. Try making things that cook either in an oven or Instant Pot first. Get a pair of Ovgloves to avoid burns. Be informed how to care for a burn.

bryansmart,

@TheQuinbox @sapphireangel @Estrella Touching pots, pans, or most liquids will not burn you if you immediately pull your hand away, even if fairly hot. The exception is liquids with oils. Those stick to your fingers, and continue to burn after you pull your hand away. It's fine, though. Don't start out frying things. Think of a dish you like. Find a simple way to make, then do it the harder way, then refine.

bryansmart,

@TheQuinbox @sapphireangel @Estrella Do you like Chili? Super fast way is thaw ground beef, break it up in an Instant Pot, add a can of beans, add a jar of salsa, add a few tablespoons of chili powder, and another few of kayne pepper. It will taste good. When you have that down, follow a recipe for making your own sauce. Try sautéing the beef first with spices. Eventually, you'll have it totally customized just the way you like it.

@Estrella I'm not blind or VI, but I'd like to participate if it's OK.

@ppatel, here's something you might be interested in.

Estrella,

@CharJTF @ppatel I mean, absolutely. I just really want to create a resource for blind/vi humans to find the things they need and where things are kind of described in a more friendly way. If that makes sense, but if you want to be a part of it, I don't see a problem with that.

@Estrella Thank you! I think this is an awesome idea. Let me know what I can do.

@CharJTF @Estrella I've been talking about creating a podcast doing this. I love this idea. I'd be happy to contribute.
