msatris,

This is such a lovely story about the erstwhile used bookstore in the Milwaukee airport!

@msatris @bookstodon This makes me want to fly through Wisconsin just to check out the shop!

@msatris @bookstodon Used bookstores in airports are the greatest retail placements ever. I don’t understand why we don’t see more of them.

msatris,

@aburtch @bookstodon it makes so much sense! You read a book on the flight, then you sell it and buy a new one for the return!

@msatris @aburtch @bookstodon So... these bookstores will buy anything? I mean, when I've tried to sell or give away old books, it's frequently hard to find anybody who will take them.

msatris,

@diazona @aburtch @bookstodon they buy erstwhile paperbacks, rare books, and if there's a particular focus or interest that the owner or their readers have, they buy those.

I rarely cull my shelves, but I just deaccessioned a bunch and while my many obscure small press poetry books didn't sell, I walked away with about $110 in credit -- they took about 1/3 of what I brought in, which was probably a total of 20 books out of the 60-70.

@msatris @aburtch @bookstodon Sure, well... I was just thinking, the "workflow" of buying a book, reading it on the flight, and selling it at the destination airport doesn't really work if there's a 70% (or 50% or whatever) chance the airport bookstore will not buy it.

msatris,

@diazona @aburtch @bookstodon well then just pack it home with you too keep? And buy another one?

I am not seeing a downside here.

@msatris @aburtch @bookstodon The downside is the physical space required to hold another book. (One book is not a big deal, sure, but repeat this a couple hundred times and it adds up)

I know not everyone views the space usage as a downside, but given the earlier toot about how it makes so much sense to sell your used books in the airport, I kind of figured that was a premise of this thread 🤷

msatris,

@diazona @aburtch @bookstodon I mean, space while traveling is a premium..... But it's not a problem at home. You just double stack the books.

I took 2 English classes my senior year of high school, followed by TAing a poetry class that summer, and that was 23 years ago. Since then I've studied letterpress printing, gotten a PhD in English, worked picking books for a book distributor in a warehouse and edited many published print books over the last 10 years . Believe me when I say having too many books never crosses my mind as a problem to solve other than by buying more bookshelves.

msatris,

@diazona @aburtch @bookstodon but I do read very quickly, and usually finish at least one book per flight, and getting to swap those out at a bookstore that's not just a boring airport bookstore but one with character informed by the tastes of travelers and the owner instead of just what's most popular on the current NYT best seller list sounds like heaven to me.

depends on how long you're away and how much you're on planes. i started doing ebooks when many of my flights were multi-hop and 8+ hours transit. i couldn't carry enough books and hated having to just leave books behind to make space for whatever grim selection i could find at an airport.

my library has a great ebook selection so i could load up with a dozen books and check out more every stop with wifi.

while i still prefer physical books when i'm home, ebooks definitely have a place in my life now.
