1Sauerlaender, Reifferscheid Castle in the Eifel, (part of the municipality of Hellenthal, district of Euskirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia) at an altitude of 450 metres, was owned by the noble family of the Lords of Reifferscheid, who were first mentioned in a document in 1195 and were at times quite influential in the Rhineland.
The castle, which was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, probably dates back to the time before 1106. Today it lies in ruins and was donated to the municipality of Hellenthal by Princess Cecilie von Salm-Reifferscheid in 1965.
