Welp, here we go. Be My Eyes is so great, people are just... Calling their projects Be My Eyes web apps now. Cause it's 2023 and here we are. No, I haven't tried this thing. I hope it's worth the absolute shitstorm of a hype train this will cause in the blind community once people get to looking at it.
@devinprater maybe if they and we call it a Be My Eyes style question let’s face it we’ve all been hoovering, our living rooms for decades! Maybe some younger people don’t realise a Hoover is a trade name it’s really called vacuum cleaner isn’t it.
@jstark Honestly no. I mean I have no problem with small local models. But this is claiming to be a Be My eyes web front-end. And then blind people are gonna send it pictures, expecting the same really nice output that Be My eyes gives them. And when it's wrong... Well... Who knows. It may come back to bite Be My Eyes. like "Oh wow BMAI on the web is crap, why are they nerfing my eyes!" kind of thing.
@devinprater@jstark I'm honestly not sure whether that would happen, if it's local, anyone who installs it is going to know, because of having read the instructions, that they're not installing anything from OpenAI and not from BeMyEyes either. I was just thinking it would raise false hopes in people and flood BME with inquiries.
@devinprater@techsinger@jstark There's a bit of a learning curve here. Those who are able to install this and configure it properly will know what it is. I also think most people are smarter than we give them credit for.
@ppatel@devinprater@techsinger@jstark I think for the privacy-conscious, it's a good choice to have a local model available - looks like you could even run this without a GPU, although the amount of time and performance would not be great. The branding part is another issue, maybe they were inspired by Be my Eyes' AI, but this being a local model is an even better reason to distinguish it by name from that original for sure, but as this is not on the App Store it won't confuse many.
@Tamasg@ppatel@devinprater@techsinger@jstark Plus, having a local model available will eventually be the end goal to get this AI image recognition tech into the secure workplace/be able to safely recognize potentially confidential material (cardmember agreements/what's the APR? What's the balance transfer APR? When does my intro period expire? etc. without sending those images to the cloud.

@devinprater OK, massive, massive amounts of negativity here but why? Why is this so bad? Isn't it a good thing to have access to upload images from not just a phone, but a computer too? I don't get the hate and contempt honestly. Break it down for me. This seems like a really dismissive reaction.
@tjolsen Oh no, you're not misunderstanding this. That's all they're doing. Using Be My eyes' brand name with their tiny model that, last I checked, can't even read text.
@devinprater so it's not even their own model, this is indeed a competitor to GPT but is a lot less structured. Lama to my understanding can be spun up by the user, but the model itself is created by Metah / Facebook
@devinprater All I can say is that I hope BME registered a trademark of some sort. I'm not sure what the European law is on this, but it would be interesting to see what they can do. Obviously, this has no connection with them but is using the name.
