alt="" is not the worst thing you can do.

Heck, it’s a Sufficient Technique for WCAG:

@ian Yeah, transcribing during a conf can be tricky, so I get it if that’s all it is.

@ian Ah, his argument is from the dev side, not the user side.

While I understand libraries can freak out, removing the alt attribute completely (versus <img alt> or <img alt="">) will cause most screen readers to announce the file name.

Oh, and is a WCAG SC 1.1.1 auto-fail.

But if he meant <img alt> versus <img alt="">, then no worries as they are exposed the same.
