The more I play 10th edition, the more I think the game system is disappointing. I just find the « rule stacking » that is encouraged in this edition to be illegible when fighting your opponent.

Each unit has a special rule, their attached characters have special rules on top, your army and detachment add extra rules, and stratagems give even more variance.

haui,

@thelinuxEXP I was so surprised when I saw the wh boxes in the corner of your video. Why am I not surprised that you play warhammer? :)

I‘m not familiar with 40k rules. I played fantasy some 20 yrs ago.

Maybe you need an app to accumulate all the stats for each character? If none exists we could write one? Maybe in bash? :D

@haui Oh yeah, there’s an app, but it’s for your army list, for the opponent, they tell you what they have at the beginning of the game, but it’s hard to figure out the combos.
For example, they’ll tell you « this unit has this weapon, and this character, they add rules X or Y », but then you have to memorize that this can be improved by their army rule, detachment rule, and potential stratagems they can use during the game. Super tricky to estimate what a unit can do!

thelinuxEXP,

It makes it virtually impossible to estimate what each move will result in, and makes you play with movement so cautiously that it slows down the entire game. You try to hide every mm of each mini, because you never know if that basic troop unit isn’t going to completely wreck one of your troops out of the blue with a combo.

It also makes some matchups super spiky, as in « you fail 3 dice throws and you’ve lost the game », which is also very annoying.

And the aura buffs around characters, plus all the rerolls (CP reroll, reroll 1s to hit or wound, reroll the entire roll) just combo way too well with certain units, especially with things like overwatch.

Some basic troop units can become complete death stars in the right place, which is just not how things should play. Elite units should slap, troop units shouldn’t be main damage dealers. I’m still winning more than I’m losing, but I’m not having as much fun as I used to.

Also, please change the mission pack. Leviathan secondary objectives kill the narrative aspect of the game, paradoxically. Having a unit stand in a corner or not shoot / charge to score is just dumb, counter intuitive and heavily emphasizes « big brain » play where each inch of movement matters more than combat.

Winning a game because your elite unit fell out of combat to be able to stand in the opponent’s deployment zone doesn’t feel good compared to slapping their warlord.

Things I would house rule if my friends agreed to (which they don’t):

  • no CP rerolls. They kill the fun heroic moments. « I killed you with a grot! No you don’t, CP reroll »
  • No special weapon rules / rerolls on overwatch. It makes certain units unassailable.
  • No action or location based secondary objectives. They destroy the narrative.
  • if you see only one model, you can only kill one model. If only 1 guy of my unit can see and shoot, then you can also only see one of my models.

@thelinuxEXP all of this + the constant change of rules, rulesets, army books etc I stopped. Fortunately I found to be perfect for me, my family and friends.

Give it a shot or take a look , hope you enjoy it

@raspikabek I don’t mind the updates to the rules and books that much (I’m the prime sucker to buy a good looking book), it’s just that sometimes they reinvent things and make them un-fun :/

One page rules does look pretty cool, yeah!

@thelinuxEXP oh! Another update. Recently Gobertown Hobbies posted a video similar to all of this. https://youtu.be/XogVrWgOZ2o?si=LhmU2wuiw5qPmmKM

@raspikabek Interesting! I’ll definitely watch that one, thanks!

Sad to read this stuff I stopped playing w40k a long time ago for different reasons, but this ia the same stuff that made me stop playing Blood Bowl, freaking rerolls and stupid mechanics. I started playing BB when I was a kid, I remember it was a french edition all made of cardboard.

@rnanclares Oh nice! I only ever played the Blood Bowl video game, but the board game always looked quite fun!

@archliberal @thelinuxEXP a OSR equivalent to wargames... that's not a bad idea at all! I'll start looking for that too :ablobcatattention:

@dropestrauss @archliberal I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if that existed!

@archliberal Honestly, I’d have more fun playing 3rd edition, which is the one I started with 😂
Rules were far more narrative back then, I feel. Maybe less balanced, but more fun overall.

@thelinuxEXP is it suffering the same fate as Magic: The Gathering?

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@whynothugo Not sure, I don’t know Magic all that well these days!
The thing is, Warhammer got a major rules rewrite for 10th edition, and while it is simpler on paper, I think it didn’t progress in terms of legibility and understanding your opponent’s army (so, tons of “gotcha” moment even with good communication), and it lost a lot on the narrative side.

Feels designed for tournaments, not for fun friendly games!

    @thelinuxEXP

Casual players spend less, so some of these games end up tailoring for tournaments or full-time players.

I hope you find folks who continue playing under the previous rulebooks.

@whynothugo I’d settle for my friends not always taking what’s competitive and making fun lists 😂

Even when I win, it feels like pulling teeth to fight the “meta chasing” lists
