@BigJackBrass I would personally be irritated by a rule that my character has to sacrifice herself to the gods for failing an escort quest, but YMMV

@shimminbeg @BigJackBrass For me that's a moment for character growth: "everybody expects me to disembowel myself honourably, but I don't wanna". Which might, for example, lead to going off into the wilderness and fighting monsters.

@RogerBW @shimminbeg The thing Tékumel often makes explicit—and which is too frequently ignored in games—is that there will be consequences for your actions.

@BigJackBrass @shimminbeg Fair point. I tend to think of that as "you're living in a society, not out on the edge" - classic fantasy, you come into town, they don't care what you did out in the wilderness, they just want your money. In a civilisation, you might well be a murderer, a thief, and so on, and civilisation won't stand for that, however super-powerful you are. (You may end up as king, of course.)

@DarkestKale @BigJackBrass @RogerBW yes, the consequences of my Saturday group's actions are currently closing in. Those being:
-the Hellknights
-the order of undead hunters
-the serpent people
-necromancers
-paladins
-elite assassins hired to take revenge
-cultists of the (redacted)

I have to make so many NPCs…

@RogerBW @shimminbeg @BigJackBrass My players, who are organising a skateboarding competition, were recently accosted by two chefs wielding monomolecular cleavers because they didn't get hired to do the catering... while a rival influencer's gang were trying to attack them.

It was very 'while you do that...'

@shimminbeg@masto.ai avatar

@DarkestKale @RogerBW @BigJackBrass Also I love the monomolecular cleavers.

Hmm, monofilament cheesewire, you say.

(in our hiatus'd Hell's Rebels campaign, one PC saved up most of his loot for kitchenware, including an adamantine frying pan. I can't recall if he actually got it yet)

@shimminbeg @DarkestKale @BigJackBrass I feel the PF core book doesn't tell us enough about this material. Sure, it's very hard and it cuts through armour, but what are its heat spreading properties like?

@RogerBW @DarkestKale @BigJackBrass Can modern science derive anything from what we do know? It appears to be canonically magnetic, if that helps.

RogerBW,
@RogerBW@emacs.ch avatar

@shimminbeg @DarkestKale @BigJackBrass Ferromagnetic, hard but not as brittle as one might expect. It'll work nicely on an induction burner, when someone invents them, but I suspect it's pretty much magic stainless steel.

BigJackBrass,

@shimminbeg Might be interesting to play out the consequences of deciding not to do so.

@BigJackBrass @shimminbeg Jon, Shim, you've just started a big thought spiral in my head of 'adventures that start with the players having fucked up another adventure' for Android, etc.

'So, you've just realised the guy that died at the start of the infiltration was the extraction target... what happens next?'

@DarkestKale @BigJackBrass @shimminbeg

  • the classic "join the frontier unit to get away from the shame".
  • the essential NPC with the quest briefing wasn't wearing his "Essential NPC" shirt and the PCs murderhoboed him for his boots.
  • they trusted the wrong heir in the succession struggle.
  • Stretching further, I played in a Laundry campaign (before the official RPG) in which the GM's scenario generator was to read a CoC adventure and imagine the result after a group of incompetent PCs had tried it.

@RogerBW @DarkestKale @shimminbeg Or listen to Whartson Hall play anything…

@BigJackBrass @DarkestKale @shimminbeg We have very understanding GMs.
