I tend to think of that as "you're living in a society, not out on the edge" - classic fantasy, you come into town, they don't care what you did out in the wilderness, they just want your money. In a civilisation, you might well be a murderer, a thief, and so on, and civilisation won't stand for that, however super-powerful you are. (You may end up as king, of course.)

@RogerBW@shimminbeg@BigJackBrass My players, who are organising a skateboarding competition, were recently accosted by two chefs wielding monomolecular cleavers because they didn't get hired to do the catering... while a rival influencer's gang were trying to attack them.
(in our hiatus'd Hell's Rebels campaign, one PC saved up most of his loot for kitchenware, including an adamantine frying pan. I can't recall if he actually got it yet)

@shimminbeg@DarkestKale@BigJackBrass Ferromagnetic, hard but not as brittle as one might expect. It'll work nicely on an induction burner, when someone invents them, but I suspect it's pretty much magic stainless steel.

the essential NPC with the quest briefing wasn't wearing his "Essential NPC" shirt and the PCs murderhoboed him for his boots.
they trusted the wrong heir in the succession struggle.
Stretching further, I played in a Laundry campaign (before the official RPG) in which the GM's scenario generator was to read a CoC adventure and imagine the result after a group of incompetent PCs had tried it.
