The "Oh c**p" moment when you realize your plumbing repair is "do or die", i.e. it's got to be fixed or you have no water.

@ai6yr I’ve had to work on condos with six units sharing a water main. Replacing a shower valve was very stressful.

@jlamoree Oof. Well, I did learn I should have shelled out for a shower valve which can be closed off with a screwdriver.

Robgbysea,

@ai6yr Been there done that. I have a leaky faucet in the garage that requires me breaking out the propane torch. I’m waiting for a day with everyone out of the house so I can work in peace.

@Robgbysea As soon as you say "propane torch" I run to a plumber, LOL.

Thankfully, got it done. But it was touch and go there for an hour. #plumbing

Took 2 hours over two days to remove this corroded handle. Note to self: make sure to remove shower handles on a normal schedule to remove corrosion. #plumbing

Ancient leaky shower cartridge, Delta. It's near impossible to know which one you have without pulling it all out. Strangely, this was originally a Hansgrohe faucet, but all the parts are internally marked as "Delta". #plumbing

Here's where the oh crap moment happened. This plastic mixer was totally lodged in there, and somehow the gasket for the mixer went missing. Had to use locking pliers to get that sucker out, and then crossed fingers that I could find the replacement locally.

@ai6yr

Use loads of white lithium grease - or better yet... the non-seize goop.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII Dumb question... on what parts?!

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@ai6yr

Any fastener...

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@JohnJBurnsIII Gotcha! I have some white lithium grease, maybe I will go re-connect stuff with some lubrication tonight.

@ai6yr

I use that liberally on the blade bolts on my mower... so easy to wrenches off a couple times each summer for sharpening.

Also garage door wheels.

Just don't fill up hole, if it doesn't have a place to squish out... hydraulic issues can break thinks if you crank down too much.

@JohnJBurnsIII Hmm, I should go do my squeaking garage door wheels, LOL. Learn something new every day on this service, it's great... Thanks!!

@ai6yr Well done. I love doing plumbing when it works but when it goes wrong... 😳.

Flooded my kitchen, which is upstairs at our place, changing a radiator once. On a Sunday evening, natch. Managed to get it sorted but my god, there was some panic. And not a dry towel, tea towel or blanket in the house. 😁

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@BonehouseWasps 😬 Yikes!!

@ai6yr That’s no fun. Wear and tear or user error?

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@BakerRL75 Old parts... Old cracked plastic parts and rubber gasket which popped out (and dunno where it went), which committed me to a fix I hadn't planned to do (was inspecting it to make sure I had the right parts for a repair later). Only had to run to the hardware store once, and luckily they had the replacement cartridge (not the OEM version, unfortunately, just a house brand... but cheaper and it worked). Dicey there for a second 😬
