Gretchen Whitmer signed a package of bills that included in vitro fertilization access and protections for LGBTQ+ parents. Under the 1988 law, potential parents had to seek an order from a judge granting them parental rights upon the child’s birth, or otherwise navigate a complicated legal process to adopt them.
