I want to give the genre a try. I have been thinking about this for more than a year and I eventually settled on as the perfect JRPG (probably). And now there is that second dilemma: Should I play the first one or skip to the second one? The Internet claims the games are unrelated and the second one is simply better.

@darth I just wanted to point out that Octopath Traveler is 40% reduced in price until March 5th on Steam

@sandr44 thank you

@darth skip to the second, much better than the first

@shinjiikarus so other people in replies told me to play the first one first so I leave myself “room” to play the second one as well in case I like the first one.

@darth I would suggest you to start with classic like Chrono Trigger or modern jrpgs like Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes.
Octapath is not that much for beginners of that genre.

@sorg I played a tiny bit of Octopath 1, maybe 2 hours? And it already made me cry. Not sure how is that possible, tbh, I am not usually that sensitive to game stories.

@darth skip the first. 2nd one is way better!

@darth tbh Octopath is kind of a "pro" level jrpg. It leans on lots of primal tropes and mechanics that it expects players to know.

For a first jrpg I'd say ff7 (not the remake) or Cosmic Star Heroine.

But if you've already made up your mind I'd say start w Octo 1.

@WagesOf 1 it is, then.

@darth I'd still recommend the first. I've talked several people into trying Octopath, always with the first one, and they've always loved it. Afterward, if you want more, the second one will feel like an upgrade; if you start with the second, playing the first will feel frustrating.

@arnelson yeah, I am aware that playing 1 after 2 isn’t an option 😇
