@ai6yr Anybody in the food industry who says they are surprised by current events is a bald-faced liar.

@W6KME I'm feeling better about the tortilla, beans, and misc foraged greens I had for dinner, as it did not involve any birds, beef, or dairy, LOL.

The Lancet: What is the pandemic potential of avian influenza A(H5N1)?

"The threat of a pandemic remains high, and we urge international leaders to reach an agreement on a pandemic accord before it is too late."

(50% fatality rate in humans... the toll on wildlife must be MASSIVE right now).

vpermar,
@vpermar@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr There has to be some context missing (for us, non experts) from that figure. A higher than 50% fatality rate is off the charts. Ebola averages at 50%, if I remember correctly.

mjausson,
@mjausson@mastodon.design avatar

@vpermar @ai6yr That is in known cases. We don't have the foggiest idea about how many unknown cases there are. Could be twice as many as known, which would bring the mortality rate down to 25%. Could be ten times as many, hundred times... We don't know.

In bovines there is a high asymptomatic rate. In humans, 🤷🏼‍♀️

There is a test for wastewater but it hasn't been deployed, because as a species we like to stick our heads in the sand. 🤦🏼‍♀️

@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@ai6yr the die offs reported with penguins in Antarctica and flamingos in Africa have been extremely alarming. Fortunately it can’t be transmitted to us because we don’t want to think about it.

samhainnight,

@swart @ai6yr If only there were some kind of protection from airborne viruses we could affix to our faces to keep us safe.

riogreyhound,

@samhainnight @swart @ai6yr I’m still wearing mine.

@riogreyhound @swart @ai6yr Me too. Every time I go out, no exceptions.

@ai6yr
Just think how cheap house prices will be if half the population dies.

dougfir,
@dougfir@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr
I heard once that after the plague went through Europe and killed off about ⅓ the population, surviving peasants could command higher wages because labor was in such short supply.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@dougfir 1/3? Maybe as much as 50% still, unless there are better numbers now? But... yes. There are labor shortages in some parts of the US from loss of people from COVID-19, even now.
