One of the big complaints I've heard about Apple TV+'s "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is that there isn't enough Godzilla or other kaiju in it.
Now, I'm a huge fan of the kaiju genre, and would love to have seen them in every scene in this show.
But that belies the fact that it's called "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," and it is essentially the origin story of PRECISELY that: The clandestine organization tasked with keeping track of giant monsters.
@flargh it was a perfect balance, I thought. The monsters were well done, and shown just enough to keep them special — not mundane.
It also had enough of them to avoid the low-budget SF show cliché of 40% of the show’s budget blown on FX shots in the opening, teaser segment & another 40% on the climax with no thought to the talking-heads filler in-between.
Also, if you actually look at the original Toho films, Godzilla often didn't show up until sometime in the second act. Or he'd make a cameo at the start, then go AWOL for an hour.
Godzilla wasn't the point of those movies. It's how we deal with him (and other monsters) that's the point.
Gareth Edwards stuck pretty closely to this formula for the 2014 Monsterverse Godzilla, and took endless shit from it - mainly from critics who didn't know or care how the original films were formulated.
@flargh gonna have to disagree with you. Having seen Godzilla minus one it’s a great balance of human story plus lots of monster. There’s just not monsters in Monarch. You can say there is but there isn’t. It’s about 80% teen angst, 10% world building and 10% monsters. Certainly not enough based on how much Apple promoted Godzilla in the trailer and leading up to the series launch.
