Fun fact: In theory, you could power a 6720W electrical appliance over a 40-wire ribbon cable like this, assuming a voltage of 240V and a current capacity of 700 mA per wire. You would of course have to use every single wire in the cable, and it might heat up a little, but it shouldn't melt or catch fire! No promises that there is sufficient insulation to prevent arcing at 240V though... 🤫

Interesting. Using one side for Live and the other for Neutral and keeping the two middle conductors unconnected to increase insulation still gives a clear 3kW (UK max safe load). I might have to try that just for a laugh.

@spacemagick That sounds like a fun YouTube video. Wouldn't be so hard to test that in a controlled manner. Maybe first the experiment that's likely to work, and then try to fry the cable for the fun visuals...

@spacemagick You're in the UK. There needs to be tea ketles!

@thor Hmm 6kW+? Have you calculated the voltage drop across those thin conductors? How much power will go into heat at 700mA with that voltage drop? You sure it won't melt and catch fire? I can point you to a table listing ohms per unit length for different gauge wire if you can't find one.
