The thing about apps like mIRC, ICQ, and Winamp is that they felt like they were made by people who used them. Apps today feel like they were designed by a committee looking at a spreadsheet.

When an app is missing basic features and still pesters me whenever I open it to try some new AI bullshit, I wonder if the PM got the promotion they were going for.

That’s one of the things I like about open source apps. Even if they’re less polished, you can feel they are made by people who use them.

It’s fascinating that C# found such a strong niche as a game programming language with Unity and MonoGame/XNA, while Java did not. They have similar tradeoffs, and Java had a five year head start. What’s that about?

what should i do for Advent of Code this year?

Last year i did everything in Rust.
One year i used mostly Go and Python.
One year i did mostly C++.
And one year i did a weird retro variety pack including Fortran and Pascal.

I like a challenge, but i also don’t want to spend all my time writing code to parse the input files. 🤔

Seriously considering doing all Fortran or all COBOL, but im not sure if i hate myself that much.

Hmm, in Windows, the sdl version of my game runs at 2725 fps, whereas the wgpu version using the same main loop only runs at a consistent just under 60 fps. There must be something in wgpu that’s throttling me to exactly that rate.

That said, the performance from sdl is kind of amazing.

Okay, maybe I’m not technically a witch, but I did recite a spell in an arcane language to a hunk of magic silicon, which wirelessly enchanted another block of silicon on the other side of the world, causing it to rearrange an array of liquid crystals, revealing runes for someone else to see. So that’s pretty cool.
