Dwayne Johnson has been showing back up in WWE events, and I do get the sense that he’s tapped out on the Disney end of the money funnel. With all that Saudi cash flowing into combat sports and with Vince McMahon getting dragged out back like the rabid dog he is, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Johnson springboards from Vince’s old position to a political campaign, with his eyes on the White House.

Gotta distance himself from the wildly unpopular current liberal President if you’re even going to begin that transition.

I think there’s something to be said of the flattening of culture that has come out of this.

You have a region that’s got a broccoli glut and a region that’s got a quinoa glut. Historically, these local maxima of produce would inform a bunch of the habits and inclinations of the society, as they leaned into what they had in abundance. You’d have a city with a giant broccoli on their crest. You’d have “Broccoli Cookoff Season”. You’d have all sorts of broccoli derivatives like seasonings and dyes/textiles and plants that produce calcium supplements from the excess, etc, etc.

Now all that excess broccoli is owned by a Mega-Corp. Nobody in town really gets to see the benefits of surplus or access a virtually free super-abundance. It either gets shipped out or destroyed and the town probably benefits more financially from a bad crop than a good one. There’s relatively little pride in what the city produces, because they’re all day laborers working precariously for a company that cycles them through multiple farm yards miles apart. There’s very little free time to exploit the excess or to develop these cultural artifacts iconic to towns.

And, in the end, you may stop producing broccoli locally in its entirety, because real estate is owned by one family three states away and they’ve decided to shift marketing to a less labor/resources intensive product.

We won’t be like China. We’ll be more insulated and divorced from Chinese media, culture, and conversation.

That’s the stated end goal. Bringing up sharp walls between nationalities in order to control the flow of information between people.

If we keep TikTok open, we risk exposing American young people to Chinese norms, ideals, and social standards. We might even be exposed directly to Chinese mass media (ie, propaganda).

This is a real security risk, as it raises a possibility that younger Americans won’t accept American mass media at face value.

Both physical and digital Switch games include what Nintendo calls technological protection measures, or TPMs. As Nintendo itself explains in one of those takedown notices, “When a game is started on the Nintendo Switch console a Game TPM is decrypted using cryptographic keys that are protected by Console TPMs. The games themselves can then be decrypted by the decrypted Game TPMs so the game can be played.”

The DMCA includes a section that says “no person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.” In other words, any attempt to bypass DRM is a violation of copyright law no matter the intent - or at least, that’s how Nintendo interprets the law, and that argument has been very effective at getting hosts like GitHub to take down software like Lockpick and SigPatch-Updater.
