As software engineers we tell each other to "pick the right tool for the job," but tbh,

The breadth and depth of knowledge to 1) know of all relevant alternatives, and 2) understand the meaningful differences between them, is nigh-impossible to build from on-the-job experience.

It takes an unreasonable level of interest and time to build that knowledge for a subset of the field.

Is there any wonder we collectively keep reaching for the wrong tools?

yellowbrickc,

@cvennevik @Di4na To continue Thomas' insights, I don't think that we need to know all the tools, but we need work experience w/ one or more of each category.

  • DBs: SQL/NoSQL DBs, maybe a column-based DB. Graph DB as a bonus
  • IaC & cloud connectors, like Terraform
  • object-oriented and functional languages, JS as something in-between.
You see what I mean? Patterns, solutions repeat themselves. Each new job will add more to the toolbox but only if we observe and not just consume.
yellowbrickc,

@cvennevik @Di4na What we can't learn from libs and tools though, are industry specificities: e-commerce, SaaS, document management, mechanical, new digital domains to name a few categories. All have specific goals and key needs. Getting specialized in more than one of those will make you portfolio of skills growing exponentially because you can combine them.

A DDD transformation of an existing (8 years old) product is possible - and I can say this now because I am part of it 💪.

I am very proud that the start of this journey was printed now in the newest book of @nick_tune and Jean-Georges Perrin about Architecture Modernization.

17.1.1 Industry example: Planting the DDD seed at a French HR-tech unicorn This industry example is an astonishing story of what can be achieved by planting a seed and patiently nurturing it. A small book club was the seed that gradually flour- ished into significant organizational changes and product development ethos.

Thinking about writing a new app. it’ll be like the scrabble version of strip poker. I’ll call it Words With Friends With Benefits.

@gdinwiddie @abbotofunreason a very short game, with only one life per level 😆

A new slide for my talk at has emerged from the @virtualddd open space 😆

Agree @diana ?

yellowbrickc,

@diana @virtualddd Provocative is my second name 😂

yellowbrickc,

@diana @virtualddd Maybe something around this?

yellowbrickc,

@virtualddd @diana Honestly? I don't care. My emoji is the 😱. If you tell me you still know exactly what you wrote in those lines then it is either boilerplate or a lie 😀.
The message behind this slide is "no metric has a value without the context"

yellowbrickc,

@gdinwiddie @ez @jessitron @virtualddd It would have been great to see you at the open space yesterday. I don't think that anyone asked this question 🤔

Want to break other people’s train apps? Why not start a place name with an apostrophe, a single letter, and a hyphen?

Now it is given as “S-Hertogenbosch”
“S Hertogenbosch”
… and “s-Hertogenbosch”

yellowbrickc,

@partim good lesson for anyone thinking names must follow some regex to be accepted as "valid"

After London, I had the same excellent experience in Milan to #pay-as-you-go with credit card for #publicTransportation. The nerd in me wants to know how this works? How can be controlled that I have a ticket? In Milan you pay 2.20 Euro for a period of 90 minutes, but you can change between metro, bus or tram
#ePayment

yellowbrickc,

@lennybacon you don't get anything. You "check in" with your card and check out when you are done. It appears as a booking afterwards. In both cities they state that you pay only for the travelling you did, even better fares than a normal ticket 🤷‍♀️

yellowbrickc,
yellowbrickc,

@lennybacon if it is so easy why is not done in more cities? The UX is excellent and with apple wallet you can call it travelling for dummies (google wallet doesn't work in Milan yet)

yellowbrickc,

@lennybacon @ciaran 👍
Do you know Ciaran, if the heavy lifting is on the public transportation side (keeping the status up to date, caching probably) or there are some payment providers which realised what a huge business this is? I mean, visa payment is generally quite expensive if you don't have special contracts.

@andijah @paulkater Your name means in German "a male cat". You are not human, obviously 🤦‍♀️ 😆

    yellowbrickc,

@paulkater @andijah I am just guessing here, of course. I think it is a huge decision to close accounts, it means rejecting money. If I had a company and thought I could outsource this to a bot, I would eventually not care about your website. I would expect that this decision to close your accounts) happens AFTER checking for a website with your clear name 🤔 But who knows ...

Please don't take my comment as valid reasoning, it was rather a rant about the technology understanding in 🇩🇪

    yellowbrickc,

@paulkater @andijah 👍 Me too! Please share it.
