The flavour of the friends -> enemies -> lovers in the series of fics, House of Mirrors (Suzaku/Lelouch, Code Geass) is still so delicious years later.

Excerpt:

“What?” Suzaku demanded with frustrated anger, holding the knife to Lelouch’s eye. It must have been very hard, to earn to fight Lelouch for so many years just to find out his enemy could no longer understand the nature of his revenge. “What did you expect? You must have seen that coming as soon as you agreed to come with me. Wasn’t that why you’ve come? For Euphie? For everybody else? For the good person you once were before you betrayed us all? So you could have a little honor at the end? So there would at least a sane part of you at the end?”

“Idiot. That was not why I’ve come with you.”

Honour, values, small talk when he was about to poke his eye out. As much as all that still annoyed him, Lelouch found some comfort in the fact that Suzaku hadn’t changed.

“I’ve come with you because you’re my friend.”

The village of Mibeizhuang produces 90% of China’s funeral supplies, but “civilized memorial” regulations and trends towards more eco-friendly funeral ceremonies are leading to a downturn in the village’s economy.

… okay I managed not to say this in the OP but, real-life Yi City? I hope Mibeizhuang’s fate is kinder.

Infinite flow/timeloop conversation has reminded me of Kill That Groundhog by Fu Qiang (translated by Andy Dudak), which iirc was on the Hugos shortlist last year: https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/fu_12_23/

I really enjoyed it! It’s definitely more on the concept-based end of the scifi spectrum, rather than the character-based, but imo it really pulls it off. Recommended.

(Also, no groundhogs are harmed.)

Idk what kinda timing this is 😆

Anyway, from the author of one of the meta I boosted yesterday: a tldr about the genre unlimited flow

https://reactormag.com/unlimited-flow-beyond-the-horizons-of-genre/

It has two danmei recs and one Korean webnovel rec too, for the unlimited flow genre

(Kaleidoscope of Death is unlimited flow btw)

edited: corrected the post to two danmei, one KR webnovel

Hey, Reactor has an article about unlimited flow novels! https://reactormag.com/unlimited-flow-beyond-the-horizons-of-genre/ (and it mentions Global Examination and Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint).

The author is 墨客hunxi and it is the hunxi of hunxi-guilai linguistic meta fame, @aegtx confirms. Good on them getting bylines!

uh, so there's this person making an audible app for ao3 and I think it's time to lock your fics if you haven't

edited: the person decided to shut it down after all. thanks for letting me know @xieliansbignaturals !

@geraineon but I dunwanna 😫

I don’t know why—it’s not like I have a big reading public who only comment or kudos as guests. Possibly it’s just a reactive sense that archive-locking your fics is being up yourself somehow. (The British class system and attendant social control will do a number on your brain, tellyouwhat.) Maybe I’m still burning a candle for wangxian+fan!

villainousfriend,
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon yeah, that’s very understandable. I (probably like you) don’t believe the entities that want to siphon out all value from our works are at all likely to respect such a signal, but I still think it’s worthwhile to send it.

I really hate that they’re turning everywhere from an opt-in space to opt-out (allegedly!) by fiat, and forcing us to take shelter or get exploited and blamed for it. Augh!!!

#MLCWatchParty I thought I had a thread for this, but I can’t find it now? Anyway! Today I have finished episodes 16 and 17, and am watching episode 18.

I feel very sorry for Xiao Zijin, having just got married only for his wife to be hung up on the dead ex whose she’d finally let go of like a week ago. :(

#ZhangGongAn: pleased to say I did get all the way through Arc 4 in the end! I can't wait to read it again in human translation and actually understand what's going on. 😓

This arc did have some more pressing downsides: the case was tied to people from a defunct Northern kingdom, so—in the MTL at least—there's a fair amount of the word 'barbarian' being thrown around, etc. I stress the MTL because I'm not sure if (a) that's a fitting translation at all; (b) it's the word a human translator into English these days would pick, if so. That makes it hard to say how much the anti-Northern-Asian attitudes should be ascribed to the characters vs. the narration, you know?

The final resolution of the case is also aided by the Ministry of Justice torturing the main suspect to get him to confess, which is very not cool.

Well, on to the next case.

villainousfriend,
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net avatar

#ZhangGongAn: I do have thoughts to share on Arc 5 already, but most of them require screenshots so I can just point and yell.

Arc 5 so far:

Everyone: Zhang Ping, it's very nice that you've solved so many mysteries, but now you have to do your actual job.

Zhang Ping: 😐
Zhang Ping: Okay.

Everyone: ...

Zhang Ping: wanders off and solves another mystery

villainousfriend,
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net avatar

@geraineon Wang Mowen wants to give him a job solving cases, but he’s playing it close to the chest so no one can accuse him of poaching (and also so Zhang Ping gets properly fed up with his current boss first). 😄

villainousfriend,
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net avatar

#ZhangGongAn: Delighted to announce that Xie Fu, the county magistrate who was demoted to be Zhang Ping’s deputy and still has not got around to quitting this vale of tears because someone needs to organise things around here, is still around and apparently going to be important to the case in Arc Five.

#ZhangGongAn, Act 5: leaving you with a good one before I get to work today.

Wang Yan knows how to be a great host! 😳

villainousfriend,
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net avatar

(I looked it up and 灌 guàn means ‘to irrigate’ or ‘to pour’, so Wang Yan is just planning to pour his friend a lot of wine… probably…

Da Feng Gua Guo says it’s not the kind of book with the other kind of irrigation, but Xiaoju isn’t even a minor character at this point. I’m sure exceptions could be made.)

villainousfriend,
@villainousfriend@federatedfandom.net avatar

Sadly for me, I think ‘irrigation’ has just jumped to the top of my euphemism list and will be staying there for a while. Damn my interest in historical water management for getting me into this.

@geraineon they're currently camping in the middle of nowhere next to a burned-down mansion/crime scene—was not expecting that to be what got him hot and bothered!
