The flavour of the friends -> enemies -> lovers in the series of fics, House of Mirrors (Suzaku/Lelouch, Code Geass) is still so delicious years later.

Excerpt:

“What?” Suzaku demanded with frustrated anger, holding the knife to Lelouch’s eye. It must have been very hard, to earn to fight Lelouch for so many years just to find out his enemy could no longer understand the nature of his revenge. “What did you expect? Honour, values, small talk when he was about to poke his eye out. As much as all that still annoyed him, Lelouch found some comfort in the fact that Suzaku hadn’t changed.

Infinite flow/timeloop conversation has reminded me of Kill That Groundhog by Fu Qiang (translated by Andy Dudak), which iirc was on the Hugos shortlist last year: https://clarkesworldmagazine.com/fu_12_23/

I really enjoyed it! It’s definitely more on the concept-based end of the scifi spectrum, rather than the character-based, but imo it really pulls it off. Recommended.

(Also, no groundhogs are harmed.)

I don’t know why—it’s not like I have a big reading public who only comment or kudos as guests. Possibly it’s just a reactive sense that archive-locking your fics is being up yourself somehow. (The British class system and attendant social control will do a number on your brain, tellyouwhat.) Maybe I’m still burning a candle for wangxian+fan!

@geraineon yeah, that’s very understandable. I (probably like you) don’t believe the entities that want to siphon out all value from our works are at all likely to respect such a signal, but I still think it’s worthwhile to send it.

I really hate that they’re turning everywhere from an opt-in space to opt-out (allegedly!) by fiat, and forcing us to take shelter or get exploited and blamed for it. Augh!!!

On the outskirts of the capital, there is a ghost market. It was originally a place where the children of some wealthy families took out their belongings and sold them, but they couldn't bear to lose face, so they set up stalls in the market late at night, with only one oil lamp lighting the stalls. It was bright, and people buying things couldn't see who was selling them. Later, this kind of market gradually became a climate and turned into a specific black market. Generally, the market opens on the third or fourth day and closes at dawn on the fifth day. Yushitai got wind that this black market had become a specific place for certain officials to sell bribes, and there was a force behind it. Liu Yuan, together with two officials from Yushitai and Dali Temple, disguised themselves as common people and went to the ghost market to get a feel for it. In order to disguise themselves, the three officials randomly bought some worthless things from the stalls. Liu Yuan bought this pen holder casually.

#ZhangGongAn: pleased to say I did get all the way through Arc 4 in the end! I can't wait to read it again in human translation and actually understand what's going on. 😓

This arc did have some more pressing downsides: the case was tied to people from a defunct Northern kingdom, so—in the MTL at least—there's a fair amount of the word 'barbarian' being thrown around, etc. I stress the MTL because I'm not sure if (a) that's a fitting translation at all; (b) it's the word a human translator into English these days would pick, if so. That makes it hard to say how much the anti-Northern-Asian attitudes should be ascribed to the characters vs. the narration, you know?

The final resolution of the case is also aided by the Ministry of Justice torturing the main suspect to get him to confess, which is very not cool.

Well, on to the next case.

, Act 5: Lan Jue started out reminiscing about his late wife, switched to the Zhang Ping track in his brain, and (not shown) cracked himself up while staring into space such that the servant coming to see him turned right around, telling himself, “Minster Lan has been very stressed lately!”

Festival, they would only have a few bows and a few words left, "Thinking of our ancestors, remembering our virtuous people."..." and the like. Everyone is just like this! Zhang Ping, on the other hand, has people sneaking to burn incense near the county government office. If he continues to deal with the case like this, maybe after many years, he will be able to set up a small temple with a clay statue just like the land. If Zhang Ping becomes a clay statue, and a group of young wives and old ladies are holding incense and chanting to it, praying to the immortal for blessings on having a son and grandchild soon, I wonder if the statue on the seat will suddenly say: "There are no ghosts or gods in the world, and nothing can protect you. You have to rely on yourself."

(I looked it up and 灌 guàn means ‘to irrigate’ or ‘to pour’, so Wang Yan is just planning to pour his friend a lot of wine… probably…

Da Feng Gua Guo says it’s not the kind of book with the other kind of irrigation, but Xiaoju isn’t even a minor character at this point. I’m sure exceptions could be made.)
