Pondering the publishing gimmicks of my childhood:

  • Pop-Ups (sometimes with bonus sliding/rotating)
  • Scratch and Sniff
  • Red-filter secrets
  • "Invisible ink"
  • Flexidiscs
  • 3D w/paper glasses

There were others, but those I actually enjoyed. Some, I was not the target audience for (like "panels of fur for some goddamn reason").

My only nostalgic pang is realizing the flexidisc is the most deaddy deadest, because only hipsters and hardcore collectors have phonographs anymore. 😮

If I had a nickel for every flexidisk... but no. I had to use the same nickel to hold each of them still on the turntable.

Just went to the waste drop off site and I shit you not, the SUV in front of me had a decal from an organ donation service, and a guy in black scrubs jumped out and hurled a pair of plastic coolers into the garbage truck and then sped away…

A couple of years ago I twittered out some thoughts on the classic Disney movie The Black Hole. I liked them so much, I copied them straight over to my blog. This post is a cleaned up version of that thread.

It haunts me. I have (faint, but plausible) hope that I still have the novel in a box I haven't opened in decades. According to Stash My Comics, I also have the first three issues of the Whitman-published adaptation in a long box.

That sounds great! I'm glad I didn't have one, though. I'm sure I would still feel the frustration in my fingers from messing it up.

Good point on the FTL. Sometimes I think the Palomino is, ummm, bigger on the inside. Just a bit, but still.

Salvage One... before I look it up, is that the one with Andy Griffith, where he cobbled together a moonshot in, basically, his back yard?

Just remembered I have SJG's Zombie Dice on my phone.

I expect I will spend a couple of evenings getting shotgunned in the coming days.

It is difficult for me to accommodate both of your urges on this matter.

I will say the context current events in American church life, but not alarmingly so (for me).

Have any of you ordered these? Do you suspect they'll hold sharpie markings longer than a session of use?

Some good thoughts about dragons if that’s a thing you think about in your games.

Did anyone on Burn Notice ever say Spyami? Any of those jokers might have, but I feel like The Chin would have been the most likely.

I am thinking about pitching a book group, like 4-5 titles, at a group of over-60s I know. “Graphic Novels You Should Have Read.”

And I realized that I’m weak on the topic now, since I don’t go to comic book stores anymore & I didn’t keep up in the general interest bookstore where I worked.

So tell me what you think the best graphic novels up to this very minute are, please and thankudrivethru.

Back in the office. I shared this a couple of days ago, because I was planning to share it at this thing I've been at. (abridged)

“I am being so silly because I pity you so much. I pity all of us so much. Life is going to be very tough again, just as soon as this is over... We are all so close to each other in time that we should think of ourselves as brothers and sisters.” -Kurt Vonnegut, If This Isn’t Nice, What Is?

I know I'll never get it, but the Star Trek I want the most is a Harry Mudd-centric show. I have some pretty specific desires, and--honestly--it doesn't have to be Harry Mudd himself. I want a lovable rogue, for whom things rarely work out quite right (maybe a Jim Rockford type actually...). Give this person a rag-tag crew & a small-mid-size beater starship. On the run, in Fugative or The Incredible Hulk style, from a specific Federation ship. A lighter Farscape (or even Firefly), if you will.
