Als gestern jemand fragte "wann habt ihr eigentlich das letzte Mal ein Backup eures Laptops auf ein Medium gemacht, das ihr nicht bei der dabei haben werdet", hatte ich nen Bonustask vor der Anreise gewonnen.

Aber: Backup ist jetzt in Salt konfiguriert und damit in Zukunft relativ einfach automatisiert auf neuen Kisten einrichtbar.

Und läuft gerade.

What are some best practices for setting up your #backup when working with large files locally on your machine?

For example, I'm working with OpenStreetMap data. The planet is 75 GB in size. I don't need to back that up, I can download it again should the need arise.

However, I'm also creating derived data from it, in files with a similar size, and generating them can take hours. I'd like to have a local backup in case of accidental rm, but don't want to clog up my disk with these backups.

My idea would be to define some coarse exclude rules, which exclude only things that I can definitely download again easily. Everything else is backed up.

Then, define some pretty short retention times. Like "keep the local backup only for a week". That way, whenever I delete one of these large files, it will be gone from the backup a week later, freeing up the space.

Any additional thoughts?

I already have a resticprofile setup, please don't assume I'm a total newbie.

TIL: You can ask GNU tar(1) to change the file names while extracting. (And you can limit tar to only extract specific files, but I knew that already.)

For example, I'm using this command to extract the static binary "resticprofile" from the release tarball, but give it a versioned file name (e.g. "resticprofile-0.26.0"):

VERSION=0.26.0
tar -xf resticprofile_$VERSION_linux_amd64.tar.gz --no-same-owner --transform "s,$,-$VERSION," resticprofile

TIL: #SaltStack will lazy-load modules at some point, which will be included in the execution time measured for whatever state that happens to trigger it first.

I think it took me half an hour of inspecting why a file.managed state with a remote HTTPS source would take 1.4 s even though it clearly had a "creates" prerequisite that should've stopped it from actually doing anything.

I was suspecting it of doing the download on each highstate, but no, it was just the module loading. 🙄

Einfach mal laut gedacht: Wenn's auf der #GPN22 so viel regnen soll, gibt's Möglichkeiten, die Wiese trotzdem zu nutzen?

Ich geh da jetzt seit ca. 15 Jahren hin und hab noch nie irgendwas an Pavillon o.Ä. auf der Wiese gesehen, sowas steht immer nur auf den versiegelten Flächen. Geh also davon aus, dass das ZKM (oder der GBA?) was gegen Konstruktionen auf der Wiese hat, aber weiß da wer Genaueres? Könnte man vielleicht Planen abspannen (wenn nötig auch ohne sie in der Wiese zu verankern)?

@daniel_bohrer Dann hab ich sie aber immer noch nicht gescannt, und die Sache mit dem Scannen ist, was mich seit ner Woche davon abhält, sie einfach schon auszufüllen und einzuwerfen, weil scannen gerade broken ist bei meinem Setup hier, und die Situation jetzt bröckchenweise (und wiederholt) hier im Thread zu erklären macht's nicht entspannter 🫠

Question for security-minded people:

How are you handling video calls in light of Win 11 Recall / Copilot?

I do not consent to other people randomly recording me. How on earth do I vet everyone's operating systems for work calls?

Right now I am angry & thus not framing the question elegantly. For the love of all that's holy, do not lecture me about asking the wrong question or in the wrong way.

If you have mandatory work video calls, how are you handling this yourself?
