Tooters has suspended accounts that would spam fedi block. Then realized the hashtag is mostly petty bullshit already so we refederated those accounts. In my opinion it is a stupid reason to recommend defederating entire instances instead of accounts.

If fedi block was used as a weapon against you in the past you would not see it as a useful tool. Let someone lie or take things you said out of context and then start a campaign to cancel you from fedi. You would see it as harmful not helpful.

There are four instances I constantly see recommended on fedi block. When I look into the receipts and talk to those admins it is clear they took action over the harassment and racism by suspending. What they all have in common is a moderation style that leaves blocking up to the user and other admins don’t like that. As far as keeping their own house clean I believe they do. Tooters is federated with all four of these instances and have never had a single issue with any of them. :400:

Oliphant is getting rid of every blocklist besides the tier 0 one. It means Tooters won’t be getting blocked by new instances who import without doing research. I am happy about this because .art is the only reason we were on the oliphant tier 3 blocklist in the first place. We are still on TBS also because of .art but nobody who doesn’t already block us uses that bias shit anyways.

I get so irritated reading toots that say it makes no sense to block Threads before they become an actual moderation issue. Wtf?? The moderation is so bad that detailed reports are published about it. All the trans peeps on Tooters should get harassed and treated like trash first? Really now? Another person thinking the solution to bad actors on fedi is to create a hashtag with the explicit intention of dogpiling them. A brigading hashtag was not a solution to women being trolled and POC being targeted is no different. You are just throwing gas on a fire.

If you encounter racism report it. If your admin doesn’t act then migrate. If the instance that account is on doesn’t get suspended then defederate it. That is exactly what moderation is for. 💯

@jdm2 the problem is how you go about warning the community. If you use a hashtag then people like that will learn about it and the hashtag becomes a target. Same way #FediBlock is abused now. People still use it for this purposes and I have seen it lead to dogpiling. I think the private groups feature that Mastodon is working on could be a pretty good solution for what you are suggesting but the feature is not finished yet.
