February's TIOBE index has as the 11th most popular language, marking its 12th consecutive month in the top 20, beating languages like , #R, and . About time to do away with that "Fortran is ancient/dead/obsolete" myth?

samharrison7,

@robinm @kornel Horoscope would imply completely made up. I agree that TIOBE isn't a pinpoint accurate ranking, but as a very rough guide to language popularity, it's not too bad. And, unlike a horoscope, is actually based on data.

Hey and folks, can you recommend a password manager for organizations that's secure enough to not have a major data breach scandal recently (ideally )?

Any else feel like an ever-increasing proportion of their working day is taken up by approving #MFA requests to login to #M365?

The more I think about the new in plug-in, the more I'm concerned about the "Python will run in the cloud" bit.

This basically means data you want to run through Python has to be sent to . They don't have the best of track records with security (ahem: https://www.forbes.com/sites/betsyatkins/2023/07/18/microsoft-security-breach-a-wake-up-call-for-board-of-directors/). But seeing as a lot of us are forced onto OneDrive/SharePoint by our employers anyway, maybe that's nothing new.

samharrison7,

You'll need to be connected to the internet to use the spreadsheet, and that's a real downside for me. I work when travelling a lot - on trains with dodgy/no internet connection. It's annoying to have yet another previously local service that now requires an internet connection.

Finally, and vendor lock-in. These spreadsheets will only work for as long as, firstly, you're subscribed to M365, and secondly, Microsoft decide they want to carry on the service.

I haven't been this excited about a new package manager since Mamba. Actually, probably since before Mamba! Go and take a look at Pixi, it sounds like it could be pretty revolutionary 👀 https://prefix.dev/blog/launching_pixi

samharrison7,

@blong I haven't had chance to properly give it a go yet, over and above a quick play around. It doesn't seem to have made it into the mainstream consciousness on the Fediverse yet, though I think it's gaining traction!

samharrison7,

@blong Ah, damn!

Academic Twitter is on the decline. Will Threads, Mastodon, LinkedIn etc be able to replace it, or is this online community dying forever?
