TikTok will be banned if it is not owned by a US company. What for?

IT US companies:

MSFT takes frequent screenshots of your desktop and stores OCR in SQLite, easily retrievable from other accounts in the machine (https://arstechnica.com/ai/2024/06/windows-recall-demands-an-extraordinary-level-of-trust-that-microsoft-hasnt-earned/)

MSFT spies your LLMs chat sessions (https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2024/02/microsoft-is-spying-on-users-of-its-ai-tools.html)

New Adobe license in Photoshop forces creators to allow Adobe appropriate their works (https://nichegamer.com/photoshop-terms-of-service-grants-adobe-access-to-user-projects-for-content-moderation/)

Google processes every single bit ever existed about you (https://www.404media.co/google-leak-reveals-thousands-of-privacy-incidents/)

"The use of probabilistic techniques to determine who is worthy of death – wherever they’re used – is, to me, the most chilling example of the serious dangers of the current centralized AI industry ecosystem, and of the very material risks of believing the bombastic claims of intelligence and accuracy that are used to market these inaccurate systems."

The western manufacturers ain't anymore

From industrial engineering to financial engineering

The case of Boeing

"The past 30 years may well be remembered as a dark age of U.S. manufacturing. Boeing’s decline illustrates everything that went wrong to bring us here."

It does not matter if you are paying or not for a service offered by a cloud platform. It does not matter if in fact the platform is your client

What should worry you is if you have the freedom to leave that platform

And you can only gain that freedom by fighting with the law the companies that want to retain you in their platforms, either as a client or as a provider

"A group of researchers backed by the French government have released what is thought to be the largest AI training dataset composed entirely of text that is in the public domain. And the nonprofit Fairly Trained announced that it has awarded its first certification for a large language model built without copyright infringement, showing that technology like that behind ChatGPT can be built in a different way to the AI industry’s contentious norm.'

"Let’s not make the same mistakes with AI that we made with social media

Social media’s unregulated evolution over the past decade holds a lot of lessons that apply directly to AI companies and technologies."

AI in education is a public problem. By Ben Williamson.

"These 21 arguments against AI in education demonstrate how AI cannot be considered inevitable, beneficial or transformative in any straightforward way. You do not even need to take a strongly normative perspective either way to see that AI in education is highly contested and controversial. "

"We discuss how psychology interacts with generative AI in problematic ways."

Young minds that ask first an LLM and receive convincing wrong answers in an anthropomorfized way will be easily convinced and it will be later more difficult to prove they wrong by adults trying to teach them the right answers.
