Photo from last night's Javanese #gamelan performance at constellation. (Sounded beautiful, especially the one piece I was not playing in :D which is the one shown below). More about our group at https://www.chicagogamelan.org/

@andresmh yesterday I played sauron and demung (I don't know how familiar you are with gamelan, but for those that aren't, these are akin to xylophones). In past concerts I have played gong and Kenong. I'm hoping to keep learning so I can play bonang and maybe even drums, but I'm still very far from it right now.

Congrats to Nouran Soliman on a fantastic talk on her best paper awarded work on meronimity (mitigating barriers to engaging in public conversations with partial, self-selected, and verified identity signals)! 👏👏 We also deployed a system for it right here in Mastodon at @LiTweeture a while back 😌 Read the paper here: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3613904.3642241 #chi2024

Make cute word clouds with data from your Google scholar page :) https://shiny.rcg.sfu.ca/u/rdmorin/scholargoggler7/ (for those who would imagine I would write the word integration all that often, I don't :) ) very fun tool! Try it! #academicchatter

There's probably a special place in hell for academic publishers. Academics, esp in CS, do all the hard labor of typesetting and formatting, but then have to deal with the publisher's BS during cam ready submission.

The rudeness I've gotten from them is next level.

#academia

pedrolopes,
@pedrolopes@hci.social avatar

@DrSuzanne @upol yeah, folks in many scientific fields do not (e.g., Nature, Journal of Neuroscience), they submit in arbitrary formats. Also they pay 3k for a paper in a journal, no talk, no conference.
IMHO long live the CS/HCI conference model, which I find much more fair (oh yeah those fields don't have anonymous submissions, they have extreme desk reject rates) and more community based (our conferences are incredible, and in it the students get lots of recognition, unlike in other fields).

pedrolopes,
@pedrolopes@hci.social avatar

@upol obviously this is just em celebrating our conferences which does not discount that people should be kind always including during camera ready! Sorry to hear about your experience with it. :(

@hackster_io wrote a nice article about our fabrication tool that improves 3D prints! UIST paper by Alex Mazursky of @uchicagocs: "As 3D-printed enclosures heat up, they can melt or degrade the performance of internal electronics. ThermalRouter helps dissipate that heat." https://www.hackster.io/news/can-you-take-the-heat-6a1fd89ac2c9

In the previous photo I am holding an electronic conference badge that is 100% made from recycled components using @xjasminelu 's ecoEDA tool. While designing the circuit, her tool recommends you different components that you could re-use from old projects or discarded devices! 2/7

😍 Excited about #UIST2023! Our lab's contributions are all demonstrated in one go (also an improvised explanation) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV_QqeN1wKo

These include five papers: #haptic feedback with supermagnets, interactive taste illusions , #VR feedback for feet, and two #fabrication tools, one for helping with recycling electronics, and the other for dealing with thermal issues with 3D printing.

All coming out at @ACMUIST 1/4

pedrolopes,
@pedrolopes@hci.social avatar

You can find all five papers and their individual videos in our lab website: https://lab.plopes.org/. All the team will be at #UIST2023 and we are excited to share these findings & new ideas with the HCI community! 2/4

In the quest to better interfaces for guidance while walking, we noticed that vibrations (the cannon for #haptics) propagate too much on the sole of the foot, which can lead to the user confusing real ground features and the haptic guidance = danger! (e.g., on uneven ground)! 2/6
