Spent way to long trying to jailbreak my old Kindle. It's still not working, but I have some ideas I haven't tried yet.
I messed up at a crucial point and it seems like I should reinstall the current firmware before trying again. Haven't tried that yet, it'll have to wait until tomorrow. 😩
Finally started with #Oxenfree for #VGCJune2024. I've played about an hour and I'm liking it so far.
It's one of those games where I can't immediately see the strings and I'm tempted to read up on it later. There's a huge amount of choices, but I haven't really figured out which of those matter and which don't. 🤔
I might be overthinking this a bit. 😅
Finally! I feel like I made a real dent in #AnEnglishHaunting today. I think I'm not that far away from finishing the game, probably an hour more would do it. Hopefully I get to play the rest soon. I'm enjoying the story immensely.
Also shoutouts to @TheRetroSven , who's stream I joined for a bit. Watching Monkey Island and having a nice chat with Sven and the gang was exactly what I needed today. I started into the evening pretty depressed and done with the world, but just an hour was enough to get me back on my feet. Thanks. 🙂
The GameBoy had some amazing games. 🥰
I wasn't quite ready to let this system go, after speeding through Mario Land 2. So I played SML 1 too (first try, no savestates, 35 minutes) and I'm now replaying #DonkeyKong. I forgot how clever the game is at showing what you can do and how it keeps adding new things all the way until the end. I'm now at the second to last stage and I still haven't reached the "let's get this over with" state. 😁 #ShareYourGames
@mforester I remember basically marathoning Donkey Kong '94 (i.e. this game) because it was so much fun. And I don't even normally play puzzle games! But despite its surprisingly epic length (which amusingly I didn't know about until I played through it, so I really got the "Mario chasing Donkey Kong through town" feel haha), its levels are interesting enough and the difficulty curve gradual enough, while also basically gfting a giant pile of extra lives that definitely came in handy after a while, that I enjoyed this quite a lot.
It's an excellent game, honestly. The difference between Super Mario Land (basically the first game for the system) and this game really shows how much more experience devs had with the system's capabilities by 1994.
Sidenote: the Super Game Boy manual has a whole section dedicated to this game. It was a little awkward when I had the SGB but didn't have this game as a kid, lol
I might have just sped through #SuperMarioLand 2 - Six Golden Coins. 😅
That's been on my replay list for a while and it seemed fitting after Super Mario World. I remember spending hours upon hours with this game as a kid and I was genuinely surprised that I just ran through it in about an hour.
Then again, I was very much "eyes on the price" and didn't look for any secrets.
Still my least favorite Mario on the GameBoy. 🤔
I really struggled with the last level, Warios castle, when I played through this classic couple of years ago. I had to hard reset every time I died to prevent me from getting game over and start from the very beginning.
@repeatro I'll admit that even though I had 20 lives or so, I used save states in Wario's castle. The level is not overly hard, but there's no checkpoint and I didn't feel like playing it over and over at 22:30 in the evening. 😅
I did it as a kid, no need to prove myself again. 😁
I still got it!!! 😎
I beat #SuperMarioWorld with all secrets. In truth, I only have 95/96 exits, but I definitely went through all levels, so I assume I missed a regular exit somewhere in the Forest of Illusion.
Anyway, I'm done and happy. This was a joy to revisit. 🥰
I listened to a podcast about #SuperMarioWorld and that really made me want to pick it back up.
So I did! 🤩
What an amazing game. I wasn't able to appreciate it as a kid, because I wanted the "better looking" Donkey Kong, but SMW has aged much better in comparison. The levels are breezy and I'm already knocking at the doors of castle 3 and 4 (there are some secret levels skipping castle 3).
I only wanted to dip in for a few levels, but I think I'll finish this again. #ShareYourGames
Continuing my Cronenberg week, I finally rewatched "A History of Violence" this evening.
I've been meaning to do this for ages. It's still a really good film and comparatively little Cronenberg-esque. 😅
This movie is incredibly tense and just keeps escalating.
Big recommendation.
The Skeleton trap has been sprung and it was glorious!!! 🤩
When I unveiled the hidden tokens and 16 dice flew across the screen rolling initiative, there were some audible gasps and at least one "oh shit". 🥳
Despite the large number of enemies, the encounter was actually well balanced. The enemies made chip damage and were sturdy enough to tank at least one hit. Some were locked into adjacent rooms and broke through the doors eventually, complicating the fight nicely. #DnD#TTRPG
The only small downside is that we spent pretty much the entire time, about 2.5h, fighting.
But even so, there were some nice RP moments, where players came up with interesting maneuvers that broke the monotonous attack + damage rolling.
TBH, I was also a bit surprised when the initiative tracker came up. I balanced the encounter to be easy for the party, but I hadn't taken into account how long it would play out.
Ultimately, everybody enjoyed it, so all's well that ends well. 🙂
I finished watching eXistenZ (which I had seen before) and moved onto Videodrome, which I had watched the first few minutes of years ago, but I've already surpassed that today.
This is a different beast. 😬
I don't think I'll ever become a Cronenberg fan, but I have to admit that Videodrome was hard to put down.
Looking forward to (and also kinda scared of) what's going to happen next.
Also kinda itching to rewatch A History of Violence, which seems like the most normal of all these movies. 😅
