👨🏽‍🦯 Totally blind since birth, I was a Rotary exchange student to Brazil in high school.
After Edgewood College, I worked as a programmer as well as in IT. Now I help to advance computer accessibility for the blind community.
I've also played piano since age 4, and concentrate in the area of the late 18th century, period instruments, as well as the music.
I have also been fortunate enough to work with the BrainPort artificial vision device, which has changed how I think of objects in my mind.

Happy Saturday everyone. I hope you all have a wonderful day, and do something really fun! I think I am going to go window shop at the Apple Store today.

kevinrj,

@mikedoise @BTyson The Apple Store doesn’t sell windows. :)

If you are in , NY during the eclipse (and hopefully not getting gouged on hotel fees), there will be a viewing party for visually impaired folks:
https://EclipseFestival.org

Audio darts, beep baseball, tactile map building, eclipse audio description, LightSound for eclipse sonification, etc.

Seems nifty. I won’t be there, tho, since leaving my backyard in Buffalo seems like a bad idea.

Also, ugh Godaddy:

<span role="heading" aria-level="NaN">…</span>

kevinrj,

@aardrian @tristan I wish I could be there, even though I’m totally blind I can see eclipses with the BrainPort.

‘Fahrenheit is what humans feel’

No, Fahrenheit is what Americans feel

kevinrj,

@skinnylatte @burritojustice Actually Fahrenheit is what humans feel. 0F is cold and 100F is quite hot. Anything else beyond weather temperatures is fine by me in Celsius. I’ve lived over a year in Brazil where only the metric system is used, so I’m familiar with both.

kevinrj,

@skinnylatte @burritojustice I think 0f and 100f define the range of temperatures that the human body can endure with clothing. 0c is not terribly cold, and 100c the body could never endure.

Except for the fact that they require a license from the state to operate, a loan from a major financial institution to purchase, insurance to shield users from the cost of their harms, and can be used to collect and share driver data without their full consent, cars represent freedom, baby!

I don't know what's going on at Amazon's department but someone needs to drop whatever the fuck they're doing and fix this. It's been this way for months, and I know I've personally emailed them and directed others to do the same. I'm currently trying to find a more polite way to say this in a followup email. How does this even happen in 2023?

kevinrj,

@Piciok @simon Please say more. That sounds really cool. I’d never thought of trying that. Probably many would appreciate if someone could do a recorded demo. :)

Just randomly remembering that time someone sent me a Windows ISO as an email attachment just because they could.

kevinrj,

@BorrisInABox Hey over there,
just realized, you have traveled a lot on airplanes, what tips would you give to someone who will be flying a lot the next 3 months.
tried to use flighty, but it seemed confusing to me.
so I’m using the flightview app.

I will be in Brazil for almost 3 months I fly out next Monday. Yes I’m taking the Ambeo headset. :)

yes I’ve been on airplanes, but not for a while.

If I were to do a regular livestream where Python devs taught me things I should know (whether I know it or not without promoting their own stuff) who would sign up and what would we talk about?

Also this would be some of the first list of people I would invite so if you raise your hand you may get a private message.

    kevinrj,

@kjaymiller Maybe why developers should never use python 2 for anything today. Like how python 2 only has integer division. :(

Signs you've been working on the same piece of code for 3 days and now have absolutely -1 ideas on how to solve the problem: Your commit message says "tried in vain to fix this stupid fucking bullshit."

    kevinrj,

@TheQuinbox When I was first beginning to learn programming in high school I was trying to write a little program that converted from Fahrenheit to celsius. It kept failing, then the teacher walked by and said “you need parenthesis around the f-32.

I wonder if anyone's ever explored the idea of using 3d audio for representing graphs? Instead of just relying on pitch like the TI84 made us do, you would actually be able to hear the line moving in space, given that your head is the origin. This would even allow us to represent the Z axis.

    kevinrj,

@TheQuinbox It’s much harder to hear if audio is in front, behind, above, or below, for many people, than if the pitch changed.

While all the restarting was happening, my phone resurfaced the terrible, awful keyboard bug that causes iOS to think it's connected to a Bluetooth keyboard all the time and never show the on-screen keyboard. This is a bad tech day. Time for bed.

@simon My phone actually is always connected to a bluetooth keyboard, I probably never would have noticed :)

@fireborn @payown I’ve been wearing Open Fits almost every day since mid July. I don’t actually notice the latency, and I think the audio quality is better than the open run or open com.

Seeing AI’s new descriptions really seem to have a thing with butts. The amount of time it spends on telling me about all kinds of butts in my photos is quite amazing. No other AI felt it necessary to tell me just how many butts reside in my photo library.

Here’s a quick tip for anyone traveling with British airways and using their inflight WiFi with iOS. The access point keeps disappearing and reappearing, causing reconnects. And because their whole WiFi setup is super crap, make sure that before you purchase any plan at all, you go into settings, WiFi, BAWiFi, more options, and make sure the address randomization features are disabled. Otherwise it will not remember that you have already paid and lots and lots of pain will follow. British airways, pls fix.

    kevinrj,

@talon I would use wifi on flights if only to know where the plane was by using BlindSquare, there is no other way I know of to know that.

    kevinrj,

@talon BlindSquare has a specific airplane mode if you go fast enough, will then say names of cities as you fly over them if it has wifi to download maps. Can Voice Vista do that?

    kevinrj,

@talon Where is “up here”? Ilka the author of BlindSquare demoed it on a podcast years ago on a flight from Spain to Finland.

Okay I'm really starting to love ! I finally got Facebook hooked up to it, so I can get Messenger messages in it, and already have iMessage hooked into it. Also it does have sound effects, they're just not enabled. And the settings option is hidden in a menu button near your chats. Yeah it needs some accessibility work, but I think I'm really gonna get some use out of this.

    kevinrj,

@weirdwriter @devinprater Does Beeper support voice messages too, or only text. I guess they could add that later. I signed up, have to wait for now.
