Dommage

julianfairfax,

@ploum c'est faux. Les utilisateurs sont toujours trouvable par défaut.

"We’re also introducing a setting that lets you control who can find you by your phone number on Signal. Up until today, anyone who had your phone number–from a party flier, a business card, or somewhere else–could look you up on Signal by phone number and message you. You can now restrict this [...]"

julianfairfax,

@unnameduser @ploum malheureusement ça arrive, oui. Sur l'année passé j'ai eu peut-être trois de ces cas. C'est pas dramatique.

Is the explore section a list of popular posts on your server, or on all servers?

I ask because I am so tired of seeing it filled with US politics. I don't live in the US, and it's not my problem what they're doing.

I have created an extensive filter list to deal with this, but it will of course not remove everything and will have false positives.

I could of course not use the section, but it's nice to see (the non-US-political) things that are going on.

julianfairfax,

I have deleted the filter now. It just doesn't work, and requires too much work to try to get working. I suppose I just won't visit the explore section anymore.

I thought Mastodon wouldn't turn into this, but, it seems wherever you have an English-speaking community online, you will have an American political discussion.

America's problems are not my problems, yet on the internet, they do everything to make sure they are.

Currently using my with working Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on @mobian! It's not ready for distribution yet. We still need to work some things out, including getting a license for the driver and firmware, but this little @PINE64 device has come a long way!

Does anyone know if there are any open source, maintained pieces of software for any of the following?

  • End-to-end encrypted email server
  • End-to-end encrypted calendar server
  • End-to-end encrypted contacts server
  • End-to-end encrypted file sync server
  • DNS-over-HTTPS DNS server

I currently use Proton Mail, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Quad9, respectively, but I don't like the idea of relying on their closed sources, in case they decide to no longer offer them or something.

I'm publishing a minor translation update for Fretboard on Flathub right now. Thanks to @bittin, @sabriunal and @flipflop97 for being awesome people and making the GNOME ecosystem more convenient and accessible for speakers of their respective languages!

    julianfairfax,

@bragefuglseth what do I answer if I have two native languages, including English?

    julianfairfax,

@bragefuglseth personally I answered "English is my native language", because it is. I also speak French natively (and will hopefully speak German at a native level in half a year). I use my devices in English, because I think that's basically just the language most software is developed for any way.

And programming languages were made with English in mind, the internet was made with English in mind and has lots of English content. I think it's just easier to use computers in English.

    julianfairfax,

@bragefuglseth with that being said though, I think it's really really sad that English has become the dominant language on the internet. An international universal language is incredibly useful. But we mustn't English just become the language of the internet, and destroy all the others.

My devices, apps, sites are actually in German right now, to help with my learning of the language. Maybe I'll set them to French, or keep them in German, in the future, instead of setting them back to English.

    julianfairfax,

@bragefuglseth I think you have motivated me to get involved in French (and in the future, German) localisation for GNOME. I will look into it!

I don't want to talk about politics on here, but I have to say this: today is the three year anniversary of a terrorist attack, an attack on democracy, attack on the free world.

The Jan 6 attacks weren't just an assault on the United States Congress to attempt to prevent the peaceful transfer of power of the President, they were an assault on the very values the modern democratic world is built on.

We can never forget them, and we must do everything we can to make sure they are never repeated.

It feels like there's so so much to "do" on the internet, but 99% of it is completely useless.

I don't want to read an endless feed text, look at an endless feed of images, watch an endless series of videos, etc. What will I learn from that? Nothing.

But, what if I don't do that then? What am I supposed to do?

I feel like the internet used to be a lot more educational. You could much more easily learn something.

And it wasn't just five websites, all consisting of content from the others!

Now that I use Moshidon, I have the ability to add the local timelines of other instances in the app. I think this is pretty cool.

So far, I have added chaos.social and tooting.ch, to explore the German and French posts on both.

Do you have any others you think I should add?

Est-ce que vous avez d'autres instances que vous pensez que je devrais ajouter?

Habt ihr andere Instanzen, die ihr denkt, dass ich hinzufügen sollte?

Does anyone know of something like MediathekView and the apps based on, for television channels in other languages?

I think it's really cool to have an open source app for television channels, but unfortunately, MediathekView also lists German-language channels.

Does anyone else have audio output issues on the ? I mean, before, during, and after playing sound, both through the speaker and through headphones, it makes a very noticeable noise, like static.

    I'm running Mobian btw.

@protonmail is tasks support coming to Proton Calendar one day?

What I mean by that is: a calendar displayed in a list-format, with due dates instead of event dates, and with "tasks" that you can mark as "done", and have them disappear from the list (still shown in a "done" section)

The new @protonvpn app is a beautiful one! It's written in GTK, which makes it right at home on GNOME (although GTK4/Libadwaita would be nicer).

Unfortunately they, it seems to log me out every time I quit the app (as in it being fully closed, since by default it stays running in the background).

I would just like to thank @thelinuxEXP and @sr for offering their Linux news and privacy news, respectively, as podcasts.

I don't want to use PeerTube anymore, since it's just not really worth it for the few channels on it, and I don't use YouTube for free software and privacy reasons. So these podcasts are great!

Of course I'd still like to see both of you on Nebula one day! We spoke about it briefly, but I don't know if anything's happened since?

    julianfairfax,

@thelinuxEXP would you consider uploading your regular videos as a podcast? No need to change anything about them, just upload the audio.

PS: do you still publish to your blog? It seems nothing has been posted there for a while. https://thelinuxexp.com.

Also, what license is the content under? Is it under an open license? I also couldn't find any source code, so I presume that's not open (I mean, it doesn't really matter for a blog of course, but it would be nice. Some do it.)

    julianfairfax,

@thelinuxEXP that's no problem. It doesn't make a lot of sense to. I don't think most people are as selective with their steaming platforms as I am.

It would nice to have the source for your blog published somewhere specifically, and or an open licence for the posts specified. As it stands, the code and posts appear to be fully non-free.

I have the solution to gnome-software on Debian depending on software-properties, which I don't want.

I now have my Debian repository, which rebuilds every day, download the gnome-software package from the Debian repos, unpack it, remove the software-properties dependency, and repack it.

This version can then be preferred over Debian's version through APT pinning.

Regardless, Debian should not add dependencies that aren't needed to projects they didn't create!
