Was curious about what happened to those vertical titlebars I used to see from time to time in earlier versions of OS X and somewhat frequently in classic Mac OS.

Turns out they only ever existed in OS X by way of Carbon, which explains why I hadn't seen them in a while. With Carbon never getting brought along for the 64-bit ride, they disappeared from macOS along with 32-bit support.

I wonder why Cocoa never got its own version of vertical titlebars. They're a bit niche I suppose, but work nicely for certain types of palette windows, and I think a vertical combined titlebar+toolbar could be nice looking on modern three-pane apps, with the titlebar also acting as a pane with selectable items.

@johnwells Probably because most script are LTR and RTL, and only a few can be vertically drawn (Chinese, Japanese…). Having to crank your head sideways to read the titlebar title is not a great experience.

For any who might enjoy it, here's a YouTube icon I made to replace the default on the Safari web app for YouTube.

It's modeled after the icon for the original YouTube app for iOS but has been designed to stand up to scrutiny a little better on larger screens.

I don't do this kind of thing as often as I used to so I'm a little rusty and I'm still not accustomed to iconography in Sketch (used Photoshop back in the day) but hopefully that doesn't come through too much!

Sometimes I wish that mental energy and time were a bottomless resource. There’s so many projects I want to work on and so many skills I want to acquire that even if I weren’t working a 9-to-5 and had all my time to myself I could keep myself busy for years.

I see some other devs who seem nearly superhuman and can chug away on their own thing for several hours after a full work day, but I don’t know how they do it. By the time I’ve finished my work day I’m just about out of steam.

@johnwells I'm basically doing a 9-to-5 working on Retcon as an indie, an yet it still feels like I can only do so little every day; and I'm barely doing anything else on the side. Hard agree!

@johnwells The secret for doing stuff in addition to a day job, though, might be to care about the day job a lot less. Feasibility depends on the situation, though

Massive shout out to whoever was responsible for the "recently generated passwords" feature in Safari 17. It saves so much trouble on those sites where the username+password fields are wired up weirdly and prevent the browser from being able to save the data from them correctly.

@CursiveHello What's your thinking?

@CursiveHello Hmm, sounds true. I think these conventions (“untitled”, “item X”) are now too ingrained in my brain for me to evaluate them objectively!
If anything though, I know that anything that counts up will end up being annoying to me—if I delete one of the ordered files, then the next one created will have a very wrong number (or there'll be a gap in the numbers).
