@foone this seems like something vaguely up your alley. https://mastodon.social/@jamesthomson/112559491809510714

Shout out to the DoorDash driver on a moped trying to do a mid intersection lane split to get ahead of the waymo self driving cab.
You have WAY more faith in Google's code than I do!

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I mean, I don't even need to have worked for Google to know how shit their code is (but it does help)

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Just seeing the shit these self driving cars do while they're driving around SF is enough to make me keep my distance

@gewt oh hey, your risc-v laptop showed up?

I wonder how hard it is to make a fake USB printer.
Like, a printer that takes any printout and goes "yep, that printed just fine" but nothing ever comes out anywhere

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@darksecond yeah but I specifically want it to lie about the print succeeding

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@demofox I've got a program that keeps printing things at regular intervals, and it wastes several seconds between items. if I had a fake printer, I could do a real print batch at the beginning, then every time it tries to print, it just instantly succeeds, doing nothing.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

My point is not a printer that's broken, my point is a printer that appears TO THE COMPUTER to print instantly and successfully.

Just I don't care if any paper comes out anywhere, and would prefer not.

You're never gonna believe this, but it turns out I'm gonna need to build a new keyboard

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

It's gonna have to be a good keyboard.
ugh. I'm not good (no pun intended) at those

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I've got a custom 3-button footpedal I use for work stuff and I'm already having to overload some buttons and now it turns out they've modified the software it interfaces with so now it has 4 possible scan types instead of 2, which is way more than can realistically fit on 3 buttons, especially since I still need buttons for "next project" and "delete last scan".
That's 6 possible commands on 3 pedals. Not realistic or usable even if I could do it

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I think maybe I'm gonna have to upgrade to my secondary idea: a wearable wireless custom macropad

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@_holger possible, yes. Can my little brain recall all the options? No.

Does anyone know if the US has recently changed the law involving pseudoephedrine or have pharmacies just shrinkflationed their packages to the point where it's no longer possible to actually get enough meds per month to last a full month?

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@julie @vxo they won't even let me purchase ONE box, let alone two

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@julie @vxo nah, this is the Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act of 2005. Some good George W. Bush anti-drug nonsense.

I finally figured out what's wrong with my dryer!
There's no drum to put the clothes in. This is a rookie mistake, Samsung.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Honestly the hardest part of repairing my dryer is that it's got a computer in it, and I gotta resist trying to run Doom on it

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I promised my roommates I wouldn't run Doom on it, but here's an idea:
The dryer has a moisture sensor, right? So it can tell how long it takes to dry a given set of clothes...

What if I made this into a keyboard?

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I just need to bin the different possible drying times and use them as input for a function that converts it to letters

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

So like, doing a load that takes 10 minutes to dry then a load that takes 30 minutes to dry: that's an A

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@dannotdaniel latency isn't a problem. I've already built a keyboard that took 14 hours to type "hello world"

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Anyway back to slightly serious things: a few people asked how old this thing was but I didn't know at the time.
The answer is apparently 8 years old.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

my spouse and I usually sleep while listening to letsplays, but somehow the playlist got messed up this morning and I got woken up early by it playing a video on how to repair dryers.
I was tossing and turning and they were like CAREFULLY REMOVE THE BELT FROM THE TENSONING WHEEL and I was like THIS IS THE WORST NIGHTMARE, I AM FIXING DRYERS IN MY DREAMS!
