A little quiz: in which of those two inputs will your password be visible aka unmasked? 🤔

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@matthiasott A

But as the question implies the icons could be interpreted either way, either displaying current state "This is hidden" or as an action "Hide this please".

I'd expect this to be made clear(er) by the default state which should always(?) be hidden

Does anyone have a good working definition of what an "intuitive interaction" a means? Not academically as such, think something usable as design principles.

I currently working with:

"An interaction is intuitive when it is learned and understood through the act of doing it once"

The key for me (I think) is in the "act of doing it" bit. Learned by doing and simple enough that's it's understood as you do it.

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman Hmm... maybe I'm overcomplicating things and it can be that simple (which would be thematically nice).

Is intuitive such a close synonym of easy? I think interactions can be easy to do but not intuitive (think deceptive patterns) I think intuitive implies a level of understanding not only action, but yeah, I might be splitting hairs

Hmm.. 🤔

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwilcox Thanks!

Do you differentiate between instinctive and intuitive? Feels like those examples are instinctive and intuitive (at least in a interface) is slightly different?

"Understand immediately" vs "reflexive" is there a difference 🤔

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwilcox Hmm... I will have to think about 'learn easily' vs intuitive. Feels like there's a difference but not sure I could explain it (yet)...

Has anyone of you worked with Relume yet? It looks well-designed but I’m always skeptical if something sounds too good to be true (“Effortlessly generate sitemaps and wireframes for marketing websites in minutes.” “Watch AI turn your wires into polished designs with a ready to use design system ready for dev.”).

Because it is usually not true.

@matthiasott I'm currently watching a company going through a website design process with a third-rate brand agency and it's awful. If tools like this could help them self-serve it'd be wonderful, and the bar it'd need to get over is bad

In any organization, many people share what they’d like to see as the intentions of the design.

As these people use their influence to define the outcome of the design, they are, in effect, designing. There’s an old saying, everyone thinks they are a designer. Well, everyone who participates in the rendering of their intention is a designer, using this definition.

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@mariusz I find the idea of Silent Design, from Gorb and Dumas in 1987 a much more useful and eloquent explanation than Spool's (clickbaity and obfuscating) 'everyone is a designer'. I've also found it lands better with non-Designers

My prediction for today is that more and more employees will start writing down texts that argue for their own vision to be realised, but they will write it as if it was an AI output.

Because they know management will listen to an AI but not to them.

Is there a static site generator that works online? As in, you use a CMS or whatever, then it generates static html, all online

edeverett,

@joelanman I'm pretty sure you can export Webflow sites as flat files. (But only in pain plans I think)

edeverett,

@ang as a designer I find this offensive.

Design goes much deeper than just colours and fun and any good design team would have designed a much more efficient boot!

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@ninavizz @ang also, I mean, if good UCD practices had been followed the people under the boot would be happy about it - has anyone even mapped the user need here?

... and there's no tiered monthly subscription button 🤷

joelanman, to UX
@joelanman@hachyderm.io avatar

At GOV.UK we avoid disabling buttons.

If the user submits a form with a problem, they get a useful error message telling them how to fix it.

Disabled buttons are hard to make accessible for people with low vision, and can't easily be focused using the keyboard

A question - why is redirecting the author page to the homepage a critical issue?

There's only one author on this site and that's me. Surely I shouldn't need to duplicate the homepage on different URL?

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle Ah! I didn't know that option existed

Thanks for the quick reply and help- that seems to have cured it 🙏

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@pfefferle Yeah, I can imagine! Thanks for your work :-)

Even just from a 'dumb user' perspective it's interesting to see how the different contexts affect the content I publish. User (my) expectations of the how content is consumed on the different sites varies so much. I guess we've (users) not formed mental models for how to deal with blogs on the fediverse yet. (In my head it's 'RSS Extra' but that's probably dumb)

designer = free roaming trouble maker (historically)

Product designer = subservient cog in a product delivery process

(Yes I feel like kicking the wasps' nest this morning 😉 )

The rise of the title feels like it comes about from the industrialisation and commodification of and the design-ification of and the rest of business.

Design as a profession feels like it's losing here. But more good design is probably being done, so maybe it's a win.

Huh I hadn't thought about the parallels between chat ai and skeuomorphic UI.

That we used to have UI that looked a lot like something we're used to (a notebook or a calculator for example). But we've mostly moved on from that, as there's also something misleading about it. The digital tool is not the same as the analogue one.

In the same way, ai pretending to be a person chatting is something we can relate to but it will probably move on

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman Nice - makes a lot of sense

Skeuomorphism is a reasonable strategy for any new tech. Helps with the 'acceptable' bit of the MAYA principle https://www.interaction-design.org/literature/article/design-for-the-future-but-balance-it-with-your-users-present#:~:text=Maya%20is%20an%20abbreviation%20for,able%20to%20accept%20and%20embrace.

New blog post: "When design doesn't add value"

https://mastodon.social/@blog@edeverett.co.uk/110983899906951533

A while ago I posted about a study from 2009 that showed that using design can make companies less profitable. This is some more thoughts on that.

A 'fun' game, for any post on LinkedIn gushing about how generative is replacing illustrators, take a screenshot of the image and use Google Lens to find it's likely source material. The created by humans will be better than when the AI regurgitation

The three on the left of the Google search are particularly nice. You can feel the plagiarism, I mean the AI's inspiration...

As I'm reading about the ever-increasing complexity and feature-set of Figma I can't help but wonder if it wouldn't be easier if designers just learned HTML and CSS. There seems to be an awful lot of work going into creating the likeness of something (a web page) without it being that thing.

I am likely too grumpy about this.

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@axbom my reaction to the examples in the Config keynote was that it'd be easier to just take a wordpress or webflow template and get it launched 1000x quicker

A 'flat' organisation or team with little or no defined roles or processes just means you have invisible and unaccountable power structures, favouring privilege

edeverett,
@edeverett@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman and if you point out those invisible power structures you quickly start to feel the effects of the invisible power structures 🙈
