digital_wyrm

@digital_wyrm@mastodon.online

I am never quite sure how to introduce myself. I am a #queer person married to a wonderful #gay man. I am a #STEM geek and retro-gamer. I’m the stereotypical programmer that turns pizza and caffeine into code. I’m just looking for social interactions and connections that aren’t toxic or distressing.

My profile is very very queer and nerdy.

@freemo Someone has formed a creepy para social relationship. Dude, you don't want to go there with me. I've already dealt with insane occultist in the past

digital_wyrm,

@freemo If you're too thin skinned to handle a block you need to get offline. This is your first and last warning. Stop stalking my profile.

I normally don't comment on #climatechange issues because I work with chaotic systems for a living. The weather is an example of a chaotic system.

The thing with dynamical systems is that they are bifurcated, sensitive to initial conditions, and largely irreversible and deterministic. They're also logarithmic.

Basically, if we did everything right today, we're probably too late because we would still be dealing with a exponential cascade over the years because of the Lyapunov exponent.

digital_wyrm,

A way I can explain it is that it's physically like trying to reverse death. The entropic and statistical mechanics in processes at work in death are at work in #climatechange. I don't know how to feel, but I'm fairly certain humanity has driven itself into inevitable extinction.

digital_wyrm,

Yes, it's hot and will continue to get hot because of an exponential cascade of dynamical factors. We waited too long.

#climatechange

digital_wyrm,

@freemo I think people are under the impression that if we stop doing what we're doing it will fix it. We have to reverse things. How do we undo the deaths of organisms that sequester carbon, sequester the carbon in the atmosphere, and transform geographic regions such that these organisms have an ecosystem?

digital_wyrm,

@freemo How do we extract protons out of the ocean to make it less acidic?

digital_wyrm,

@freemo Humans have created large-scale largely irreversible changes. We're actually changing the tilt of the planet. It's not enough to just stop polluting.

digital_wyrm,

@freemo No, that's not how it works. Organisms don't evolve things because they need them. They evolve things relative to their genetic diversity, and humans have driven an appalling loss in biodiversity which will cause a genetic bottleneck such that animals can't adapt.

digital_wyrm,

@freemo I assumed animals, otherwise, your nature comment was nonsensical. There's no appropriate context in Physics. It sounds like woo to me

digital_wyrm,

@freemo These conversations frustrate me. Let's take oxygen. It comes from plants, right? Say we killed ALL the plants, would oxygen just come back on its own? No. Of course not. We've effectively done that with ecosystems that sequester carbon and prevent acidification.

digital_wyrm,

@freemo It has no context to me because natural forces related to balance correspond to the principles of least and maximum action or entropy. Life emerges as a consequence of a thermodynamic IMBALANCE that chemically allows for stored energy. It's the reverse. Thermodynamic inequalities allow for chemical energy to be stored.

digital_wyrm,

@freemo No, we killed it. We're currently killing sea lions due to a run away effect of an algae bloom. Are you missing that we are responsible for deforestation and the heavy metals already killed a lot of the ecosystem that sequestered carbon?

digital_wyrm,

@freemo You're frustrating me because you're arguments are predicated on a teleological argument, which in that aspect, exemplifies the religious beliefs that got us into this mess. Instead of using science, you're using spiritual tropes about nature that doesn't address the problems.

digital_wyrm,

@freemo I gave you several problems that need to be addressed. You gave a solution to not one.

So often it’s women with crimped hair trying to explain to me what is and isn’t natural.

digital_wyrm,

@ryanhoulihan This gave me a much needed laugh. I work in Bioinformatics for a living. Genetics shows the parents of queer people have more fecundity, which means there's a correlation between their child being queer and the parents' ability to mate.

#LGBTQ people can allocate more resources to nieces and nephews thus increasing the chances of that child, & the lineage, surviving. That's an evolutionary explanation for it being natural. We're awesome NATURAL care givers for large families.

I think Threads will ultimately be bad but just won the war for the Fediverse which will ultimately be good. And the status quo is the most I generally expect so I think we’re still fine.

digital_wyrm,

@ryanhoulihan IMHO I don't think #Meta cares about us. The cohort that uses the #fediverse is statistically hostile towards monetization & capitalism. #Meta could never convert you or I to their business model. I think they're trying to go after #Twitter users they can convert.

I'm more concerned with the IP issues, which is why I've decided to put anything of creative importance on servers I own, like my blog. I think #Meta understands we hate them. I think #Twitter is the target.

Mathematics is fun when you understand it's not a realistic description of reality; rather, it's a symbolic language you write elegant poetry in or a game where conjectures are how that game plays itself out. It's like watching a story write itself, essentially. It's art. It's another way to perform.

digital_wyrm,

For pedantics out there, we don't really understand the relationship Math has to real world. 1+1=2, and Math has epistemic value for predicting reality, but we can't empirically observe it and perfect geometric shapes, like circles, aren't physically possible, especially on quantum scales. Math is straight forward but metaphysically enigmatic. It's awe inspiring and beautiful.

#RPAdmin: I've posted a new State of the Pizza blog post for July! Sorry about skipping June, there were so many kittens. 😭

(It's posted to our Patreon but you don't need to be a Patron to read it!)

digital_wyrm,

@trixter The state of the pizza is tasty. Sorry, bad joke.

    digital_wyrm,

@trixter You look like an older version of one of my favorite Youtubers. I say that with affection - in a not creepy parasocial way - and not ageism:

I sometimes look at the shit I write and I am like Jesus Christ I'm fucking dark!

    digital_wyrm,

@stevesplace For some reason pinning my emotions down with words allows me to manipulate and transmute them so that I can control them.

The act of placing them in a box of words and arranging them to create something helps me.

You just don't realize how much you are repressing until you go back and read your journals, look at your art, read your poetry, or, in your case, listen to your rock songs.
