I just read this article and it made me remember a conversation we had a while ago: https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/13/infosec_in_brief/

Money Quote:
> Spanish cops handed the recovery address to Apple, which was reportedly able to identify the individual associated with the account.

Creating an anonymous blog is easy for web developers.

For example:

  1. create GitHub account with anonymized email address (e.g., Apple’s Hide my Email service)
  2. use Eleventy or similar tool to create a static blog
  3. publish on GitHub Pages (e.g., anon123.github.io/blog/)

But what about the people who don’t know how to use GitHub, npm, code editors, etc.? Like if somebody is a political activist, and they want to blog anonymously, what can they do?

@simevidas
I'd argue the setup you're describing is more pseudonymous than anonymous.

Law enforcement just needs to show the right warrant to Microsoft, Apple and maybe your ISP to get all the information about you they need.

A political activist that fears retaliation from their government would need something better.
What that something is, I don't know.

Between July and December 2022 Microsoft received 25.199 law enforcement requests. For 16.023 of those, they disclosed customer data. There's no more recent data because Microsoft stopped publishing it. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/corporate-responsibility/law-enforcement-requests-report

It's fair to assume that Apple and all other Western companies have similar numbers because they're legally bound to cooperate with law enforcement everywhere.

@simevidas
That report by Microsoft doesn't list the reasons for the law enforcement requests. Most of those requests will be for criminal cases. But activists being targeted by law enforcement based on basically nothing isn't a new development.

Do you know of any instance where either of those companies rejected to work with law enforcement because of ethical concerns (or worries about bad press)?

The only thing that comes to mind is Apple refusing to unlock iPhones. But that's because they can't, not because they don't want to.

Do you think if I'd make a working PearPhone with a custom Android skin there'd be enough Dan Schneider series fans (not Dan himself - screw him) to actually buy and use it as a daily driver?

@Emily if you manage to make it pear shaped I'll buy one.

So :innen made it into the German language? It’s grammatically correct? I’m out of the loop.

@simevidas

It's called 'gendern'.

Conservatives call it woke and predict the downfall of the german language because of it. So I'd say it's somewhat well established.
