> In his memoir The Singapore Story, Lee [Kuan Yew] relates that he tried unsuccessfully to drop 'Harry' when being called to the bar at the Middle Temple, but had stopped using the name by then. He succeeded when called to the Singapore bar the following year.

> Before returning to Singapore, Lee dropped his English name, Harry. Notwithstanding, even until the end of his life, old friends and relatives referred to him as Harry.

smh casual deadnaming 😢

@lain there's a town here that was named after a famous philanthropist Lim Nee Soon (died 1936). however, as part of the government push for Mandarin in the 1980s, everything had to be pinyin-ized, so "Nee Soon" became "Yishun" and the name stuck 💀

there are some things jp classroom instruction won’t teach you, like how to use the 12-key swipe input on smartphones or how to install a jp ime on your riced out arch linux install :cat_alien:

@mrsaturday @lain i guess i’m lucky cause i get exposed to hanzi everyday, some of it just trickles down after seeing it after some time

and there’s alot more hanzi you need to know than kanji :3

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@lain @phnt @meso @mrsaturday i pay for it cause i want the full jp experience (tm)

i do learn some things that i miss from self learning, but if you’re starting from scratch i feel like you’re going to have a bad time if you’re just learning from classrooms

what you do get is the sense of actually being in jp, the sense of you can tell they didn’t change the curriculum in decades, being forced to ask questions in japanese, and having rigid structure etc which i feel supplements my own self learning quite well…

for western consumption why are japanese name orders reversed but chinese names normal :acat_losingit:
i search for jp figure in original SURNAME GIVEN NAME order but then reverse it in the last minute remembering western conventions :blobcatnotlikethis:
chinese names do not have this problem, deng xiaoping doesn’t become xiaoping deng in western media…

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

actually there's one jp thing which has resisted the name reversal:
HATSUNE MIKU【初音ミク】
don't see "miku hatsune" alot as much as the original order 💙
