ok here it is. how to set up your very own single-user mastodon instance and run it free forever. boosts ok in case it's useful to anyone who wants to set one up. i recommend doing it simply for fun and for the learning experience. good luck! https://josh.is-cool.dev/running-a-mastodon-instance-entirely-free-forever/

camilobotero,

@josh
This amazing! It is even useful for a lot of other projects.
I’ll save this post and your blog!

Is anyone using a self-hosted Zotero server? Is it possible?

The few projects I found are no longer maintained. And my impression from questions on the Zotero github issues is that this is not their priority at all.

camilobotero,

@Elendol
Why do not use the WebDAV feature? You can have 20gb for free with Shadow Drive, for example.

However, the hype is there! :D

After spending a bit more than two months using the Arc #Browser, I have some comments on it:

  1. I wanted to try it, mainly, because I find its appearance fantastic, the UI is incredible. Let’s accept it, in great part of proprietary software the UI is better in comparison with #OpenSource. Of course, there are some exceptions, e.g., : @CorkApp has a very clean, intuitive, and good-looking interface.
    Regarding browsers, #Firefox, my personal and favorite one, still has an old appearance.

  2. Arc has a lot of functions, and every week, the company behind it (The Browser Company Inc.) releases an update, sometimes with new and interesting features.
    However, I never used all of them, I just liked and used every single day the auto-hiding hover-sidebar, and the quick access to my extensions, with some of them pinned, also it was auto-hiding and hover.

So… Does it make sense to have all those functionalities, that at the end consume a lot of resources? Short answer: No.

There's something about the notion that the media are going after Russell Brand to silence him that leaves me cold.

I'm interested in it, and I believe the allegations, but they need to be investigated properly.

But people on the left warning that establishment types are using these accusations to increase censorship and attack the left ... somehow doesn't inspire me.

I mean, that's probably happening. But I think I just think the left has allowed this to happen. ...

Introducing Masto Reader. Like Thread Reader App, but for Mastodon.

How does it work? Mention @mastoreaderio(@mastodon.social) anywhere in a thread and say "unroll" and the little bot will do the rest.

Here's an example (that takes a bit to load for reasons)

https://mastoreader.io/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmastodon.gamedev.place%2F%40badlogic%2F111071396799790275

You can share those links with others.

Links to the crappy source code can be found in the bot's profile.

Everything runs in your browser. The server doesn't log anything either.

Enjoy and spread the word.

camilobotero,

@badlogic Wow! I have no words. Amazing work. Thanks for creating this awesome tool!
Please, keep this path!

My tip for a personal note taking app is https://standardnotes.com/
Opensource, very good security, externally audited, works on all your devices. However no collaboration but that's because of the security.
#StandardNotes #Security #Opensource

camilobotero,

@ErikJonker

It looks interesting; however, I continue recommending @joplinapp.

It is Open Source, it is available on every single device, it is for free, and it has almost all the functions that Standard Notes has.

Obsidian just got so much better for me because after months of not using the mobile version I have finally realised that you can tap on the “current view” to switch between other view types. E.g., from “files” to “search”, which has allowed me to make the “pull down” action the Command Pallet … so I can run things like Daily Note.

That lack of clarity on the UI made the whole thing near useless and now it’s amazing. Agh.

A screenshot of the iOS Obsidian application with the sidebar open in a “search” view. It will search through all of the notes I have made in the app. There is no clear icon or indication of how to change the view to show, for example, the Files interface.
A screenshot of the iOS Obsidian application with the command pallet open; a fuzzy search allows you to type and possible actions are filtered until you find an action you want to take. In this example, I can open todays daily note.

camilobotero,

@mattwilcox
There are also some interesting alternatives, with a particular and awesome characteristic, they are open source.
I’m talking about @joplinapp, a markdown app you can use as notes app, and a new discovery for me at least, #AnyType, an app as Notion, but much better.

So... deleted #Twitter account last week, deleted #Instagram today.

Still in the process of disentangling myself from #facebook, but getting there. Reddit will likely go as well, once #lemmy picks up a bit more steam for niche communities.

But how about search and email? Password manager? GImme your best tips for leaving Google behind as well.

camilobotero,

@EvilCartyen
If you don't mind paying, @protonmail and @protonvpn are your answers.

I already have it, and I always recommend it so much.

They have #ProtonPass, and it works very well. I was using @bitwarden before, and I think both are very good alternatives.

camilobotero, to RaspberryPi

Looking for suggestions.
Long story short, I'm tired of my data being mined by cloud providers such as Google, so, I decided, finally, to create my own using a #RaspberryPi 4 and @nextcloud

Right now I am enjoying it a lot. However, I am struggling with three things:

  1. I couldn't get to port forwarding to access my cloud outside my home. I do not know what is happening, but my router seems to be the problem, even if I created the rules as I saw in some tutorials. Any help here will be hugely appreciated.
  2. #NextCloud app for #Android is nice, and I like to have everything there; however, I would like to have a specific app for my media. Does anybody know if there is an #OpenSource app for Android that I could use to sync my media with my NC?
  3. Notes by NC is a nice one, but I am using @joplinapp and I like it a lot. I know I can, and I will do, store my notes from #Joplin in NC using the WebDAV utility; however, my concern here is how to use Joplin directly in NC.
    Edit: Screenshot

Got myself a feedbin subscription and a kagi one. While completely substituting YouTube with newpipe and closed my twitter and reddit account. Give me a better source of cute short animal videos than instagram and I will be free of "shitty web".

camilobotero,

@Amirography
For the email, I would suggest you @protonmail (they also have other interesting apps). I started using the mail, then I changed my VPN, later my calendar, and now I'm using their password manager.

> I would like to know your impressions about #Kagi. My concern is the limited number of searches I can do every month. For sure I would surpass it.

I have also deleted my Reddit account. About Twitter, it's just about time, I never use it that frequently, I'm just waiting until they deactivate and delete it for me. I just don't want to sign in there.

camilobotero,

@Amirography
Never happened to me.

I just tested it on my Outlook and Gmail accounts, and the emails arrived as usual. I'm attaching some screenshots.

So, no problem at all with @protonmail

Screenshot #1
Screenshot #3

camilobotero,

@Amirography
I will take a look then. Maybe it's what I'm looking for, and I can finally discard Google's engine search.

Sign-in with Mastodon will be shipping later today!

"oh dan, what if someone uses this on every pixelfed instance"

I got that covered

Admins will be able to take advantage of an optional feature that checks against a central list of webfinger accounts with an incremented count, so you can limit this to 3 uses across all :pixelfed: instances 😉

camilobotero,

@dansup @pixelfed

What if I do have an account already? Can I combine both and keep just the Mastodon one? ✌️
