@upol I found most of the self-help books on writing a personal statement to be bad advice. In retrospect, less is more, and had I done it again I would have simply noted my research interests, which faculty I wanted to work with, and why.

@andresmh @upol Yeah, in hindsight (if available at the University), taking even one semester of undergraduate research would have been a significant leg up. Otherwise it's hard to get letters beyond "Titus did well in the class." 😬

@andresmh @upol The thing I don't know how to rewind is that the requirements keep getting higher. Undergraduate applicants often have more publications than I did when I graduated from the PhD.

new pet peeve -- why are alt text limits set far below the amount of text that can be reasonably fit into images?

@jbigham You can file an issue with mastodon if you think it needs to be longer. I've also been hesitant to change any constants like this (unless they are explicitly intended to be configurable) since we have to be compatible with other instances and clients.
