This note attached to today's Mastodon security patch might mean it's time for me to think about closing down Dragon Style; the last time I tried to update past 4.0.x I ran into some blocks I could not get past and I am pretty sure I have not magically gotten better at wrangling a giant festering pile of Unix in the intervening time.

I will attempt to get this patch in later today, once I've showered off the brain fog from the remnants of this stupid cold.

I'm in docker; the current huge blocker is that somewhere between mast 4.0 and 4.2, it started to require a new version of docker, which will not compile on the version of ubuntu this is all running on top of, and all my attempts to update the server have failed!

(plus there are Some Modifications to dragon.style which always makes upgrades a fucking nightmare)

If something like that happens there's a very high chance it'd be moving to completely different software. Like Wordpress with its ActivityPub plugins, because Wordpress actually has concepts of "themes" and "plugins" and "auto-update" (and "supporting old environments") that have completely eluded Mastodon in the seven years of its life.

One of the reasons updating is always A Fucking Pain is because any attempts to customize the look of any particular Mastodon regularly gets stepped on by Garg treating all us small server runners like cattle.

Which is why I keep on thinking the best path forwards feels like making the time to see what a multi-user Wordpress with the Activitypub plugins would look like, because I have never wanted to be a cattle rancher.

Oh nice, I woke up with a head full of boogers that have the distinct scent of ones that come from cleaning up after a cold is defeated. Hopefully this is the case for me; this thing has been hanging on with @zebratron2084 for like a week and a half.

kitchen sink broke late last week

kitchen sink got replaced this monday

a half hour after the maintenance guy left the stove gave up the ghost

new sink's faucet is incompatible with the dishwasher adaptor

went to hardware store, they were out of what they said should be what I need, what they say I need doesn't seem to actually exist

all this on top of us having this nasty cold for the past week and a half

Yay, the test has a nice strong line on “control” and absolutely nothing on “test”, which means NO RONA. Just a cold. Apparently there is a kind of nasty one around the city this year and I guess we got it.

Well really just looking at the front page of FA is a risk of that, I now know that there is someone who is so invested in drawing poop that they have observed that [censored for your protection] and accurately rendered this in their drawings of someone pooping, and every so often this knowledge just floats up and I feel absolutely cursed.

Offhand I’m trying to think of other Wizard Schools from fiction and I’m really not sure shifting into a reality where I’m taking courses at Brakebills or Unseen would be any better. I’m pretty sure that Unseen would at least be cooler with trans students.
