Picked up a coffee and croissant from a coffeeshop down the street and then enjoyed my breakfast at this little nook in my apartment, and I need to do this more often.

@andycarolan @sarajw @starshaped I’ve lived in US PNW my entire life, grew up never having AC, as an adult never had it until an apartment in Portland (high rise) and then I bought an old Craftsman house and these houses were built to take advantage of moderate temperate climates. Due to climate change, Portland is on its way out of that to a hotter summer climate.

@andycarolan @sarajw @starshaped I broke down and had central air installed in 2014 after having the house fully insulated. It is still very common not to have AC here, I can’t imagine living through our 2021 heat dome without it (three back to back days: 108/42.2, 112/44.4, 116/46.7).

There was a point in time where I was concerned that FB (this was before Meta name change) usage would become so pervasive by business and government that I’d be forced to use it regardless of principle. I’m glad we didn’t get there, but what I feared in FB is actually what is happening with AI.

One additional thought, it can’t be easy to be forced into an unethical platform because its what everyone else is using, and I understand that. For me, the pressure was hardest right after college, when not only were all my peers going to work at FB-ecosystem companies, but all the events that my friends were having used FB for invites and it was just too much of a stretch to include anyone outside that. I lost a lot of those friends.

And even this fails to touch on whether you have a choice, which is what I previously alluded to, if all communication channels started to use an unethical platform/method and I had no choice.

@andycarolan I have just been waking up ridiculously early for some reason this year this spring, basically with the birds/sun, so it is so peaceful and nice out there at that time I've been really enjoying just puttering and doing light tasks with a coffee.

@andycarolan btw iMessage is free between iCloud accounts/devices, at least in the US, and doesn’t count against SMS usage, do you have that in the UK too? I don’t know if the deal is an Apple/carrier thing is why I ask.

@andycarolan I mean, its not cold, but it isn’t a temperature I would purposefully try to achieve indoors, I also don’t think a few of the houseplants like it that cool during the daytime (that would be a fine temperature for nighttime)
