Anyone who is reading this plays #Linux games on their TV in the living room? What's your setup? Do you just have #SteamDeck hooked-up with a dock or do you use Steam Link software on your TV to stream #VideoGames from your gaming PC or do you have a "Steam Machine" type of a dedicated device just for TV #gaming? I wish to hear about it.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@darth It's a Steam Deck on the official dock. It works for all sorts of low-end experiences, and we used it to stream some higher-end games like The Quarry from my desktop in the other room.

Tried out Maimai in the arcade room. I love that the evolution of the rhythm game genre has been to just make sillier and sillier control schemes.

@missingno @phi1997 I ought to be around for SG casuals before lunch, if you're interested.

I got schmixed by baggage claim.

Meeting up with my roommate who’s on a later flight, no biggie I’ll just grab a bite to eat and kill time until he gets here.

Have to grab my bag first though, else I’ll lose it.

But now I can’t go back to all the restaurants behind TSA, one way trip. Thought there’d still be something else down here but nope.

After 15 years of using an iPhone, I'm considering switching to Android. I've ordered a cheap Samsung just to try it for a while before buying a top-end model.
Let's see if I can get used to it.

(I'm also a Mac user so there will be some trade-offs..)

I really like the Busycal iOS app, does anyone know a good #Android alternative? It syncs with my calendar & tasks on Nextcloud.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@ruud I can't say I've needed anything more advanced than Google Calendar, but at this point Android and iOS have stolen so much from each other over the years that you should have no trouble switching.

It takes so much effort to determine if I'm even interested in a given game these days. No, I don't want to play your online-only game. Even if it wasn't terrible for preservation, it's way worse value than other games that have private servers or LAN. Some games have those but don't list it on the store page. Some, like Palworld, say they require an internet connection, but they actually don't. Devs dodge questions in threads asking if there's going to be LAN at all.

This is a topic that's very important to me, and Ross Scott has done a ton of work on this. It looks like we've got something actionable on this, especially if you ever bought a copy of The Crew. Just under 3 hours until the release of Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition on PC.

I can't wait for this game to release as this is where my time will be spent for the next few days if not weeks.

Will anyone else be playing this on PC by chance?

@cliffwade Yes, but seeing as they made me wait several years, they can keep waiting until it goes on sale down to like $40-$45. I did love that first one though.

@reviewspace If we're using boomer shooter to refer to games like Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, this is decidedly not as old school in its design as those.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@reviewspace No, it's not a term coined by you, but it's typically been used to refer to new games that are harkening back to a design older than what Phantom Fury appears to be aiming for. Phantom Fury looks to be channeling a more post-Half-Life vibe

lol I guess my YouTube subscribers on NJB Live didn't enjoy my gaming streams lately. I lost 8 subscribers! 😆

Twitch subscribers went up on the same content though, which further reinforces my idea to stop multi-streaming and start putting different content on Twitch and YouTube.

The audiences and their expectations are different.

Plus using Restream is annoying and introduces lag, and multi-chat is annoying, too.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@notjustbikes For what it's worth, if I'm watching a stream, I'll always prefer YouTube, because you can pause, rewind, and then play at fast speed to catch up. Twitch will just put an ad on top of the content you're trying to watch with no recourse for what you missed.

It just feels like all the games I really really fall in love with the most always end up becoming horribly cursed in the end. Every damn time.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@missingno The idiots yelling about panties and armbands have infected so many Steam forums. It seems like a systemic problem with Steam right now. Go to any semi-popular game's forums and see threads complaining about it "going woke". SG is no better or worse off. If the games you liked you were truly cursed, you wouldn't have gotten to play them. And at least of the ones you jotted down with a title, they're not live service games that are doomed to disappear forever.

hypolite, to VideoGames

I’m tired again of turn-based tactical video games where you attack immobile opponents because it isn’t their turn to act. Mode 7 Games introduced me to simultaneous turn-based gameplay in Frozen Synapse (2011) and Frozen Cortex (2015). Has any other game successfully implemented a similar system?

#VideoGames

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@hypolite There's Phantom Brigade, but I think reviews called out the macro layer of the game, between missions. It was very fun in a PAX demo though. You might also be into something like Door Kickers or Breach & Clear, where you set up a tactical plan like the old Rainbow Six games and you're largely just watching that plan play out; both allow you to take actions after the initial plan as well.

ampersandrew,
@ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

@hypolite That upcoming game Ara: History Untold will also be simultaneous turns, but tactical battles are just one part of it. It's largely a 4X game like Civilization. Can't speak to its quality, obviously, since it isn't out yet, but it might also be what you're looking for.

    @WagesOf @darth More that they don't want early access games on there that are theoretically more prone to breaking than "released" games, but this will be one of many examples showing why that's perhaps a dated philosophy.

    @darth I don't know what the chances are, but I'm still hoping for it. I haven't shopped there in years, because as important as DRM-free is, so are cloud saves, automatic updates, and treating me as well as their other customers. Perhaps not v2 but v3? Whenever that is?

    "To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage. "

    Those are not your only choices. You don't have to make a live service. It can just be.

    After thinking about it, if Mr. Sweeney is interested in fighting Valve's "monopoly" they should be doing everything in their power to port the Launcher to and getting it on the . They could, single-handidly, undermine 's control of the platform and use it against them.

    https://www.theverge.com/23996474/epic-tim-sweeney-interview-win-google-antitrust-lawsuit-district-court

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

    @the9thdude Valve so thoroughly avoids anti-competitive practices that Epic would have no leg to stand on. And, IIRC, it's not legally considered monopolistic if the leading company got where they are by just offering a superior product or service.

    Honestly, I would love to see a future where Epic makes an EpicOS to sideload on the SteamDeck. Not because I would use it, but because then they could have all the control they claim they're unfairly denied elsewhere.

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

    @WagesOf @the9thdude I'm not an expert, but a quick google leads me to the FTC web site

    https://www.ftc.gov/advice-guidance/competition-guidance/guide-antitrust-laws/single-firm-conduct/monopolization-defined

    That says, "Obtaining a monopoly by superior products, innovation, or business acumen is legal; however, the same result achieved by exclusionary or predatory acts may raise antitrust concerns." And this also matches some corporate training I've had. Perhaps there's nuance here I don't understand, but that seems like pretty plain English to me.

    Finally got to playing around with PlayStation 2 emulation on my Steam Deck via EmuDeck. It's not intuitive that you need to use the PCSX2 QT emulator rather than through EmulationStation Desktop Edition like I do with 8 and 16-bit consoles (plus PSX and PSP, though they use standalone emulators, but launch via ES-DE).

    So far, Final Fantasy X runs at 2x graphical scaling without too many graphical glitches. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 has strange audio cut outs during the intro FMV but not during a quick game.

    At this point, I'm using ISO or .bin+.cue files and haven't converted them to DVD-format CHD files. Maybe later once I see how other games play.

    #VideoGames #SteamDeck #Emulation

    ampersandrew,
    @ampersandrew@mastodon.world avatar

    @qlp The key is to put your multidisc games in subdirectories and then have the playlist files reference those files from the parent directory. Then you don't need every game listed as a playlist. At least, I'm pretty sure I got everything cleaned up using that method.

    11 years ago today, City of Heroes was officially* shut down.

    One of the greatest MMOs of all time, it had been bought up by a publisher who wanted to kill it off in order to boost their own alternative offerings.

    If you ever met 'Kid London' running around on there, that was me.
