Southwest just emailed me to ask if I booked my rental car for my Denver trip. They're a little off the mark on that one I'm afraid

I was today years old when I discovered you can connect a Brailliant BIx and a Mantis to an iPhone and work them in tandem. The Braille shows up accurately on both and both can be used for typing, as well as navigating. The catch is to do this, you need two HID displays. it's freaking cool though!

I'm using Microsoft's neural voices for my NVDA say-all voice. I just read the abbreviation "C/SrA.", which is short for cadet senior airman. Instead of just saying the letters, the voice decided to say "C/ sister A" for some reason. Please, voice manufacturers, PLEASE stop making assumptions about abbreviations, dates, and acronyms.

alyssa6595,

@alexhall You can use those with NVDA now?

Today in the world of weird accessibility issues, @hmaealdeza told me that her Grab app (the Uber/Eats equivalent in parts of Asia) has stopped letting her see the top tabs with VoiceOver. Considering those tabs are for choosing between ride, food, and mart, that's kind of a big problem.
I still had the app from when I visited there, so I tried it. Turns out mine was also updated, but I could see the tabs without any issue. So I suggested she reinstall the app ... and against all common sense, the tabs came back (the very next day🎶).
I will think of this whenever support tells me to reinstall the app, and will probably take them more seriously going forward, because sometimes it just fixes things for no apparent reason.

@stirlock @hmaealdeza @simon That's better than my immediate thought which was the Theory of a Dead Man song with a similar name

Someone told me today that it might be really helpful for there to be a song to help young kids learn braille. Like those other little rhymes you learned when you were a kid such as 1, 3, 7 and 9, we are odd and feeling fine. I wonder if this would actually improve comprehension. I thought about maybe working on something like this if I thought it would get any traction anywhere. Thoughts?

alyssa6595,

@MS26 There's a Braille rap song that I think one of the schools for the blind made many years ago. It's horrible! Even a lot of kids I worked with at summer camps couldn't stand it. We need fresh ideas for sure!

alyssa6595,

@liamerven @MS26 my point exactly. Anyone that knows about it knows it sucks!

Sometimes advocacy is exhausting and doesn't feel like it goes anywhere. I just saw a post from someone on fb that is a blind mom. She just returned with her baby from visiting her husband in England. The customs agent asked how many kids she has, and then followed up her answer by asking if they all take care of her. She replied that no she takes care of them because she's the mom. When will this crap ever stop? I don't see it happening in my lifetime.

I made this one just for you @blindbat84 Audio alt text: I narrate that my vacuum will return to its dock, followed by the returning to dock sound. Then I say it reached the dock, and it plays the sound which sounds similar to the State Farm jingle. I end by saying this is my State Farm Vacuum.

alyssa6595,

@evilcookies98 @blindbat84 It doesn't exactly. It will bump into things, but it's not moving fast enough to do any damage.

The person that is gracious enough to drive me to and from work insisted I needed to try an onion burger. Apparently they're Oklahoma's claim to fame. He even purchased one for me. It's a smash burger with sautéed onions. All I can say is holy onions Batman! Yes! So many onions! I'll probably need to brush my teeth 3 times to get rid of the breath from this meal 🧅

I was today years old when I learned Del Taco has shrimp tacos and burritos, as well as birthday cake shakes, for a limited time. Guess what I'm having for brunch. I've really cut back my takeout, but it's been a long week. A treat is in order.

dhamlinmusic, to mastoblind

Ok so here’s what I want, I want #BrailleDisplay brands to start offering realistic payment plans for their products, when your payment plan expects a #blind person to be able to pay ~$300/mo for a year to buy a product that I would really hope should last a hell of a lot longer than that it feels sorta slimey. I mean my phone that is less than a third of the price is on a 3 year payment plan. Also, I’m guessing a whole lot more blind people would buy #braille tech if it could be paid for over 3 or 5 years. @mastoblind

alyssa6595,

@dhamlinmusic @mastoblind While the expense and frustration is so real, this unfortunately wouldn't be viable for companies. Phone companies can get away with this because they sell sometimes milions of phones. These blindness tech companies are dealing with a much smaller target market.

I can speak to this one on a spiritual level. You almost need a separate piece of luggage for the dog. Thankfully on my last trip flying with a dog, we were visiting someone who bought many of the supplies Jan would need for the trip. https://mastodon.social/@Blindworrell/112113060411585559

and of course my uber driver for the return did that thing where they see me and drive off and you get the message that says "driver had to cancel, finding you another driver." Which means she saw the dog knew she was going to ge! fired if she outright denied me and cancelled. The nearest driver is 30 mins away. sighs

alyssa6595,

@blindbat84 @Pawpower A driver made a video encouraging drivers to do that? I! Can't! Even!!! 😡😤👿

alyssa6595,

@blindbat84 @Pawpower Not personal my ass! It's against all people that work with a service dog, not just those who are blind. My contempt and disgust is so real

I guess it could be said that I'm getting into the spring cleaning spirit. I'm attempting to purge items I no longer need. It's going to be a slow process, but it's something I need to do for many reasons. My plan is to do a little at a time and get a lot of clutter out of my house before lease renewal comes around.

alyssa6595,

When I moved to Little Rock for training, I was very neurotic about taking as much stuff with me as I could for fear of my family throwing out items they might not understand were significant to me. While there are of course some things I still hold near and dear, so much of it is just stuff. It serves no other purpose than traveling with me to a new location and sitting there. Some of it I've held on to for the last 10 years and for what? It's empowering to choose to let stuff go.

A friend is helping me fill out this Department of Transportation Service Animal atestation form for flying on Monday and it's a good thing I checked because she was filling it out for Callisto! Who is NOT coming to california with me lol! WRONG DOG! 😂😊🌛🦮

alyssa6595,

@Pawpower Oops! What's crazy is how many times that form asks for the dog's name, like it's going to randomly change or something.

alyssa6595,

@Pawpower Hopefully there's time to fix it.

Dear hearing people, if when you find out I am deaf you wax lyrical and do extensive naval gazing about a life lived without music or sound, please note that my per-minute rate is $500, with a five minute minimum. After all, capitalism teaches that if you pay for something, you value it more. Also, I deserve this money if I am listening to your audist horseshit! Yours sincerely, 🧏‍♀️ PS I don't care how you feel about not being able to hear music! I don't even care about not hearing music! 🥱🙄

alyssa6595,

@Pawpower People are so freaked out about what they don't understand and then they say dumb shit like that. I'm not even deaf but one that I've had you and others tell me is how surprised people are to hear about the deafness because, "You don't sound deaf".

I just got my groceries delivered. I have to say Walmart In Home has been a fantastic service. No more getting groceries dumped at the wrong apartment. For a treat this week I picked up some frozen peanut butter and chocolate banana slices. Yum!

alyssa6595,

Oh my god! That post had the worst typo ever! It's been fixed now. Pro tip. If you're using Braille screen input, dots 4 and 5 are closer together than you may think they are.

alyssa6595, to random

The semi-anual time changes are annoying. It's impossible to make a dog understand their dinner time will change.

alyssa6595, to random

I hope the coffee is strong enough to get me through today. I somehow sat in my classroom for about 20 minutes without remembering to turn on the lights. That's something I always make an effort to remember. Yes I can see lights but I don't use them much at home.
