So Legacy Family Tree has just come out with a free-to-all version 10! I wanted to mention this especially to because one of the new features is a FAN report. I haven’t downloaded it yet, but will let you know when I do! ~ Christine @genchat

A few days ago, I posted that I use the Australian Capital Territory (ACT, home of Canberra) as the canary in the coalmine for COVID-19 in Australia.

Now the ACT (thank you Emma) has brought back a mask requirement for its hospitals, walk-in centres and community health centres.

Apparently the hospitals also have updated testing requirements for new admissions.

As I've said before, I use the Australian Capital Territory (ACT, home of Canberra) as the canary in the coal mine for COVID-19 in Australia (seems to have the most reliable data).

The number of people in hospital with COVID has more than doubled in a week - highest weekly hospital number since the 1st week of January 2023.

In 2020, the ACT reported 3 COVID deaths. In 2021, 12 COVID deaths. And, to date in 2024, 24 COVID deaths.

Thanks Emma! Too many politicians in Australia have been silent on COVID (and the other nasties) for too long. I keep hoping a government or sporting team will do a bulk purchase of masks in their official colours. Then athletes (including in sports which get government funding) could put on a mask (and give out masks) when doing fan signings. Garden centres could also have a mask giveaway - given the risks associated with potting mix.

Has anyone had the new beta matches list?

I really don't like it and have submitted feedback to that effect.

On my android tablet it's really slow and clunky.

Only the first few words of my notes are now shown.

Having to click through to successive pages of matches is a pest.

It might work OK on a modern pc with lots of memory but for me it's a retrograde step.

Makes things deeply unpleasant :((

Are you in the USA?

Some of the new/forthcoming AncestryDNA changes require a ProTools subscription (membership), which is apparently only available to USA subscribers.

MASKC (which didn't close down) despite its closing sale) has an 80% off Memorial Day sale, including KN95 masks for kids.

The reduction shows up when you add an item to the shopping cart.

Unsure how common this is in other #ChronicIllness affecting cognition, but when you have #MyalgicEncephalomyelitis the writing errors you’re almost guaranteed to make are:

  1. Double the same word
    or
  2. Exclude it altogether
    Or do both!

So frustrating & the sicker you are the worse it gets. You simply can’t see mistakes! Other problems too ofc but I’ve found this is the most common error made by #PwME

I did both when composing this!

I miss my old brain!

And this is where we can be more kind. Often all we need is the gist of a comment or message. So making fun of people, or needlessly pointing out errors, is not cool.

I see the latest update to has addressed the problem that affects around 8% of men and 2% of women.

It affects me.

The coloured dot system to group matches by family branch was virtually unusable by me.

Now the dots include a letter ... The first letter of the group name.

Brilliant!!

A really great improvement!!

Australia's Denis the COVID Info Guy isn't reportng this week, so I'll post a few things.

Lots of reports on the grapevine of COVID-19 in Australia - school, work, residential aged care.

The ACT Government now seems to be the most reliable reporter - its weekly COVID-19 report is out - and it's not good news.

Four deaths reported this week (thus 20 in 2024). Hospital cases up to 29 (from 22). And one person in ICU.

https://www.covid19.act.gov.au/updates/act-covid-19-statistics

PostcardsFromParadise,

@auscovid19 @DenisCOVIDinfoguy

The COVID-19 report for South Australia seems to be out.

It appears SA has reported 1528 COVID-19 cases this week (up from 1468). And they seem to have released the monthly death report - 27 deaths. RIP

There seems to be a lag in COVID-19 reporting by the NSW Government - looks like the most recent report is for the week ending 11 May (released on 16 May).

From my reading (!), it appears COVID-19 actitity is increasing, including Emergency Department presentations.

And it looks as if 2820 COVID-19 cases were reported (up from 2019).

Apparently NSW thinks the recent rain is still affecting waste water reports.

The Queensland COVID-19 info also seems to have a lag.

The data for the week ending 5 May 2024 was 1116 cases, with 180 people in hospital.

The data for the week ending 12 May is 1193 cases, with 206 people in hospital.

Australia's COVID-19 report for the week ending 16 May 2024 for Residential Aged Care has been released.

Sigh...

It appears that active COVID-19 cases for residents has risen to 2150 (from 1798) and has risen for staff to 960 (from 797).

The State of Victoria (Australia) has released its COVID-19 report (17 May 2024).

Current trends indicate high levels of COVID-19 activity.

The 7 day ave. for people in hospital with COVID-19 is 284 (up from 208).

Wastewater suggests increasing COVID-19 loads in metropolitan and regional areas.

JN.1 is the dominant variant in wastewater (97%), with KP.3 the fastest growing JN.1 sublineage.

Small group of scientists, clinicians call for CHO’s sacking, with shock claims of ‘let it rip’ COVID approach. By Jackie Sinnerton

@qldhealth @ShannonFentiman #COVIDisNotOver @auscovid19

Source: https://couriermail.com.au/coronavirus/small-group-of-scientists-clinicians-call-for-chos-sacking-with-shock-claims-of-let-it-rip-covid-approach/news-story/087cf90ce37adf5aca551e0ee8877e3f

A collection of respected scientists and clinicians has made an unprecedented call for the sacking of chief health officer John Gerrard. The group has made shock claims Dr Gerrard’s office adopted an “unscientific let-it rip” approach to the Covid pandemic and these policies cost lives and put many thousands of Queenslanders at risk of serious long-term illness. More than a dozen international, interstate and Queensland academics, researchers and medics have penned a letter to Premier Steven Miles and Health Minister Shannon Fentiman outlining what they claim are several false and uninformed Covid statements from Dr Gerrard that have purportedly minimised the seriousness of the virus. “He has repeatedly made public statements that are objectively untrue and which failed to reflect the substantial scientific evidence available at the time,” the letter, which was sent this week, states. A senior doctor employed by Queensland Health backs the call for Dr Gerrard to be replaced and has signed the letter. “Thanks to his downplaying of the need for basic mitigations in healthcare, we now see patients exposed to infections from staff, visitors and fellow patients, with Australian data demonstrating a 5 to 10 per cent mortality rate from hospital-acquired Covid seemingly being ignored,” the doctor said. “Dr Gerrard has used his position of authority as chief health officer to promote falsehoods about Covid such as droplet mode of transmission
Health Minister Shannon Fentiman stands by her chief health officer and credits him for keeping Queenslanders alive during the pandemic. “Queenslanders can thank both Dr John Gerrard and Dr Jeannette Young for their expertise and leadership during the pandemic. Queenslanders are alive today because of them and their actions,” Ms Fentiman said. “Dr Gerrard is a renowned clinician and continues to provide expert advice around managing Covid-19, in line with agreed national and international approaches. When he says people should get vaccinated, to test if you have symptoms, to stay home if you’re infected and to mask up when needed, I take that advice seriously and so should Queenslanders,” she said.
A Queensland Health spokesman has also rejected the claims in the letter. saying it was important to judge the state’s response to the pandemic by the results. “With more than 20 per cent of Australia’s population, Queensland has fortunately seen only 14 per cent of the nation’s Covid-19 deaths. This is one of the lowest mortality rates in the world,” he said. Dr Gerrard is on leave. Dr Alan Baxter, another registered medical practitioner, and an Emeritus Professor in Cellular and Molecular Biology at James Cook and Monash Universities signed the letter and told The Courier-Mail that Dr Gerrard’s position is one of great responsibility which affects the welfare and longevity of most people in the state. “His recent announcements trivialising and dismissing long Covid, for example, has left many people — and not just in Australia — wondering. In most occupations, this would be more than enough to trigger review of performance; in a position of this nature,” Dr Baxter said. The academic who is living with multiple sclerosis, claims policies adopted by the CHO’s office failed to protect people at high risk of death and disability. Dr Baxter’s view and the views of all signees are entirely their own and not the view of associated institutions. Dr Gerrard was appointed chief health officer for Queensland Health in December 2021. He was the long-term director of Infectious Diseases at the Gold Coast Hospital.
