@noxblog wrote an excellent article about the recent moves made by Eugen and the Mastodon gGmbH and why treating other instances than mastodon.social as 2nd class is bad for the whole community.

I really recommend checking it out!

@jcrabapple @stanford If that's what he intents it's not that bad. What is though is that it's not publicly communicated, despite public interest. It has to be an inclusive process, and if it has to be organized by meeting up then at least let everyone know. But don't just do it ignoring anyone who got questions. Nobody can just expect the public to trust them about seemingly bad decisions to only be temporary, especially not when they're in a position of power.

Guess I have to use my range for something good for a change. Please read and #RT if the #Fediverse is important to you.

A few days ago, @Gargron, maintainer of #Mastodon and the big instance mastodon.social, wrote a blogpost explaining how the official app will soon feature his instance as a default.

Voices of the community weren't heard. He even doubled-down on it.

We have to prevent this change.
Please Eugen, #DontDoTheElon.

Eugen’s misguided moves on Mastodon

Natanox,

To make it abundantly clear: I do not think Eugen is acting with malevolent intentions. I do however strongly criticize the lack of communication and that what he's currently doing promotes more competition instead of cooperation (even if it's by accident), which the Fediverse should not have.

The reason we're so nice to each other here is because most of us expect the other to be inherently good, or at least have good intentions even when they're angry. Competition alienates this culture.

Diese Bitcoinbots bspw. werden ja definitiv auch von denen dicht gemacht.

I’ve gone from using the git command-line exclusively to almost exclusively using Sublime Merge.

I basically just keep it open on its own monitor as a real-time dashboard of all my changes. That, and the ease with which you can stage hunks and lines, has improved the quality of my commits and also gives me greater peace of mind.

(Downside: it’s a commercial app and Linux support exists but isn’t first class. e.g., doesn’t automatically respond to light/dark mode changes.)

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@aral Unfortunately closed-source software, so hard pass for me. Looks cool though.

In case you’re wondering how little old Kitten performs in the tests of the Big Boys…

(And that’s from a development build of a Domain page, not a deployment build so no compression, live reload script in page, etc.)

Turns out it’s pretty easy to ace such tests when you’re not spending cycles and code doing horrible things to people in your web pages (like tracking their every move and attempting to exploit their behaviour for profit). 🤔

@aral People should explain sth. like Pi-Hole to others not just as adblocker and security measure, but also as speedbooster. All those unecessary requests bouncing even before your router can be a huge accelerator.

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@chrisg @aral It is. Context-based advertising isn't worse in any capacity - it even turned out to be better where it was used. No tracking tech required, lower power consumption, same range (turns out people who're shopping in the smartphone category are interested in technology products, wow!), no need for intense data brokerage etc.

However that simply can not be. Tracking-based ads are the only reason Google, Meta etc. exist.
Which is why they must die. 😈

Mal schauen wie schwer es wird da ein virtuelles Gerät zwischen zu quetschen welches die Messwerte anonymisiert ohne das überladene Webseiten großer Unternehmen völlig unbenutzbar werden.

Is there a different ending for the third play through if you don't have all the weapons?

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@julia No, you got to have all weapons. Also make sure to save on the roof of the Shrine and, for the different ending, choose the option that sounds more like killing. Then (for your convenience) save in another slot so you can reload and reach ending D quickly.

Hey @visone @Anachron, got a question about #VoidOS: how quick is it in bringing new packages to the repo, and how well are they tested?

One problem I dislike in Arch is
that it breaks something so god damn often for me. I also begin to like Void for other reasons, but stability is also really important to me.

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@visone @Anachron I see, thank you.

The amount of orphaned packages in the repos don't look good though...

#VoidLinux looks quite interesting. I like the minimal installer.

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@visone It definitely has something, but the fact I can't just install a gnome group and even have to activate the dbus service manually is... quite something.

Still, the handling of services is way more practical than with systemd. I REALLY miss journalctl though - is there some pendant to that you can recommend?

(Your avatar is from an Android ROM, right? I'm sure I know that from somewhere...)

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@visone Oh, wrong word. Uh...something comparable, an equivalent tool.

I've never removed a distro VM faster than with #NixOS.

Never seen something that convoluted, what in satan's name…

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@kkarhan Quite the achievement indeed.

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@kkarhan I tried to use flatpak on Nix. It seemed to have come without any standard repo, which is equally impressive. Even Arch doesn't strip Flathub, and I thought they were purists.

Natanox,
@Natanox@chaos.social avatar

@kkarhan @twoolie Diversity in technical opinions are good as long as it's clearly labeled. THAT actually contributes to the problem, as Arch calls itself "simple" which IT FUCKING ISN'T.

The problems I see are:

  • Missing use-ready hardware
  • Missing advertisement for it
  • Cultural hostility, keeping non-IT people away
  • Only technical docs, no simple guides even your parents understand

The infighting between distros ain't even surfacing to the general population.

Natanox,
