A little late on this one, but here’s a problem about figuring out the dimension spanned by a set of vectors. See my thought process and solution here:

A couple days ago I posted my solution to a simply stated problem. My method wasn't so elegant, but it's been nice to see so many responses with other approaches. You can seem them in the comments to this video: https://youtu.be/JUxyTEHHCqA

Some of my viewers discussed/asked about this alternative method to solving a problem, so I present it here: https://youtu.be/0t_ljJ17YKc

Glad you enjoyed it! Not sure I would call this “everyday use” but like I mention in the description, a good technique to have in your back pocket.

Now that I write this, I remember that I used this in a research project several years ago, so it’s not just a gimmick!

Even academic mathematicians can go through times of not liking math so much. That happened to me during today’s problem. See me vent some frustrations here:

@RobertJackson58585858 Thanks! A main part of why I started the channel is to show ALL of the experiences in solving math problems, including the bad ones. Of all the videos I've ever posted I think this is the most frustrated I've been.

Today's problem was quite frustrating, a lot of mistakes were made. See my thought process and a whole lot of incorrect reasoning here: https://youtu.be/et9cFHJIKG0

@ColinTheMathmo Thanks for the feedback!

I think I could have figured this one out if I took my time more and thought more carefully about it. I even had some ideas for some completely different ways to approach the problem that I didn't explore.

Showing the struggle is pretty much the whole point of my channel. I want the young aspiring mathematicians that watch to understand that you won't always know exactly how to solve a fresh problem, and making mistakes is a huge part of the process.

A viewer asked about the Gamma function. It wasn't a specific question, so I just decided to prove its most well known property. See the thought process here: https://youtu.be/R1AS9ocj0fY

Today's problem is very geometrical, so sketching a diagram should be one of the first steps. Once that's done, a general approach can be laid out. See my thought process and solution here: https://youtu.be/NhbPBeQMD60

Today’s problem considers a limit of a function of two variables. Sometimes different techniques are required compared to approaching limits of one variable. See my thought process and solution here:

Today's problem is a good test of understanding how iterated powers propagate. Nothing too deep in this one, just keeping track of computations that need to be done. See my thought process and solution here: https://youtu.be/3xVait9Rg9k

Today’s problem leans hard on the binomial theorem. I have a small hiccup at the end which almost threw me off course, but end up with the correct answer. See my thought process and solution here: https://youtu.be/vUdrrBfPRY0

@MathOutLoud@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@ColinTheMathmo not sure where my brain was at in the moment with this one.

MathOutLoud,
@MathOutLoud@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@ColinTheMathmo yeah that’s true. And I like to show off my mistakes too so that younger learners and students can see that errors are part of the learning process, and you never really stop making them altogether.

Today’s problem has a few misunderstandings regarding what I’m being asked about. This causes me to be confidently incorrect, but luckily I figure this out before the end. See my thought process and solution here:
