I just compensated my Brussels #IAPP#DPC23 trip's carbon emissions by buying #SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) into #Finnair's system.
The price was 230 eur. Yes, that's a lot for an individual given the rock-bottom subsidised fares we enjoy now, but at the same time, if the value one gets from a flight couldn't take that hit - maybe the flight is not worth taking?
This sort of additional cost ought to be regulated into ticket prices all across the EU, immediately.
@avs It may or may not be. You need to search the actual sources of the fuel and the actual additionality of the action. Does Finnair provide enough information for such an assessment? I know Viking Line doesn't (though I paid the "sustainable" fuel surcharge anyway just for fun).
So what was the additional surcharge you paid for the SAF? I've just tried to look for it and I can't find such an option. #Finnair says 0,2 € for HEL-BRU. This is just the mandatory minimum #SAF share. Greenwashing.
#Finnair now forces you to pay for selecting a seat, even at checkin. Otherwise the seat is assigned. Rather than creating an enthralling experience, airlines seem set on milking the pennies from us, making flying a negative experience (in an era when we are told we should fly less anyway). Simultaneously they want to present themselves as being better than the likes of Ryanair.
This race to the bottom can’t be good longer term. If there was an airline with a quality experience, I’d go there.
Would be cool to get the diploma flying over the #Northpole someday.

Finally had a chance to fly over the #Northpole on Finnair AY42 ICN-HEL, on an #Airbus#A350-900 at around 11900m altitude. Flight distance of ~9300km taking 14 hours, compared to the great circle route of just under 7100km (~10 hours). Very comfortable flight, but I'm slightly disappointed I didn't get the "Northern route diploma" from #Finnair :P
