The humor in this section is pretty dry. The two characters (Ume & Shiomi) are struggling to get along. Things are a bit lighter in sections where Ume-san and Tomo-kun banter.

“Could you light me a smoke? One of the flavored ones.” Sharing a smoke had become kind of a ritual with us, bonding over nicotine.
She lit two cigarettes at once and passed me mine. I was moving up in the world. This time, she had given me a secondary kiss instead of my taking it. #WIP
Shiomi has been smoking Golden Bats which are unfiltered. (A cheap brand) It is implied that her girlfriend kept her on such a tight budget that she couldn't buy more expensive cigs. (Ume isn't her girlfriend, at least yet.)
@NaraMoore If you are penny pinching wouldn't you be rolling your own? Most people I know who still smoke roll their own, because it's cheaper than buying a pack.
You would think. The smoker I knew back when I doing the rural poor back to the land thing all did roll-your-owns. But I know tons of people who refuse too.
As for the fic. roll -our-owns would lose the romantic appeal I am going for. These are not macho girls. Shiomi is def. femme. And Ume smokes a brand that is targeted toward women.
@NaraMoore Arguably there is nothing romantic about smoking...
I never saw rolling your own as a macho activity? It's just something you see people doing with their hands and it's completely incidental to the rest of the scene.
For me, cigarettes live in the kind of depressing mind-space of people smoking because they do, because it makes the world slightly less stressful... people without much hope.
