So the #Tories management of expectations was bang-on - they held onto Uxbridge but lost the other two seats contested in yesterday's #byelections.

The fact that they could hold on to one out of three (#BorisJohnson's old constituency) is in itself a metric of how warped the UK's #democracy is right now - that the wreckers still have some public support remains pretty depressing!

Today & into the weekend there will now be endless projections of what this all means for the next #election!

jalfro,

@ChrisMayLA6 Not really an example of warped democracy (though our electoral system certainly is warped). The Uxbridge result is no doubt a measure of resistance to Sadiq Khan's ULEZ scheme to reduce traffic pollution. As such it probably represents a reasonably accurate measure of public opinion in London. The worrying thing is that vote-chasing Starmer might now try to get Khan to drop it, rather than offering him support.

Stevenheywood,

@jalfro @ChrisMayLA6
It's also a measure of how easily the Tories are capable of getting away with pretending they had nothing to do with their own policies and actions whenever it becomes expedient to do so. The bicycle scheme launched by Livingstone became popular with the media so became "Boris bikes." The anti-pollution policy launched by Johnson is unpopular with the media so it's "Sadiq Khan's ULEZ."
